Bliss, Cedar Vale-Dexter win big at state shoot
More than 800 trapshooters compete at high school championship
More than 800 high school shooters competed Saturday in the 2018 Kansas Trapshooters Association High School State Shoot in Sedgwick.
Cedar Vale-Dexter finished first as a team with a total score of 479, followed by Chaparral with a score of 471 and Bishop Carroll at 465.
Baldwin, St. James Academy, Garden City, Ashland, Rock Creek, Pleasanton and Circle filled out the top 10 out of the 50 teams competing at the event. Other notable teams from across the area include Valley Falls (13th), Minneapolis (35th), Concordia (36th), Clifton-Clyde (37th) and Southern Cloud (40th).
In junior varsity, Valley Falls took the top spot with a 437, followed by Garden City (431, high-gun 93) and Bishop Carroll (431, high-gun 90). In the novice category, Hiawatha scored 389 for first, followed by Buhler (381) and Garden Plain (358).
The overall high-gun award went to Cedar Vale-Dexter's Cody Bliss, who posted a total score of 99 with a reverse-run score of 50. Kyler Acord was close behind, posting a 99 with a reverse run of 46, and Bliss' teammate Tracy Sweaney took third with a total score of 98. In the girls division, Bishop Carroll's Rebecca Ring took first with a total score of 98. Aubrey Cartlidge, of Winfield, scored 90 points for second place and Emma Speer, of Cedar Vale-Dexter, took third with an 87.
Hiawatha's Hunter Pavlish took second in the boys junior varsity high-gun competition with a 94. Valley Falls' Brantly Montgomery took third place in JV with a total score of 93 and a reverse-run score of 7. His junior varsity teammate on the girls side, Brooklyn Correll, took second in that division with an 87.
DIRTY GIRL ADVENTURES TO HOST KAYAKING EVENT — Dirty Girl Adventures will host a Morning on the River kayaking event from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 6 beginning at the Delaware River.
Paddlers will then travel to the Kansas River for some time on the sandbar and then head to Lecompton at the Rising Sun River Access Area. Paddlers are encouraged to bring sunscreen, water, electrolyte replacements, hearty snacks and lunch, a hat and water shoes or old tennis shoes.
Regular kayak rental is $50, and club kayak rental is $40. A regular OYO is $25, and club cost is $20.

The bus will load in Lecompton at 7:30 a.m.
Dirty Girl also will have a kayaking event, with the bus leaving from the Kaw River State Park at 3:30 p.m. July 9. Kayaks will then launch from Sachs Cabin near Silver Lake and floating 4 miles down the Kaw River back to the state park in Topeka. View more info at https://www.facebook.com/events/606049309751156/.
