Detectives made a rare discovery while serving a search warrant at a west Oklahoma City storage facility, and officials are now asking for the public’s help.Officers found heirlooms dating back about 150 years, and police think they were stolen. Police found coins and checks dating back to the 1800s inside the storage unit.Among the checks was one dated Feb. 5, 1929, that police showed the media. That check was among several unusual finds Oklahoma City Police Department detectives made last week.Other checks from the 1800s and rare historical coins were also recovered during the investigation into stolen property.“I know that someone is probably looking for this,” said Megan Morgan, with the Oklahoma City Police Department.Police say the investigation started when a Missouri man tipped them off that he had found his stolen drone for sale on an app. The drone’s GPS was traced to the storage unit.“Oklahoma City police were able to help this man recover several pieces of his property,” Morgan said. While recovering the man’s items, officers also found unrelated stolen property, including the old coins and checks.“It appears to be very rare, valuable coins,” Morgan said.Police have not released pictures of the entire collection because they want to make sure whoever claims it is legitimate. By examining one check, police can tell it’s from a bank in Louisville, Kentucky, and the person who signed it has the last name Kringle.Authorities also are sharing the story in Missouri and Kentucky in an effort to find the owner.Police have made an arrest in connection with the stolen drone investigation, but they are working to determine if the same man is responsible for the stolen checks and coins.
