Cops ask: What's the scents of shoplifting?

A career criminal who was accused of robbing a TJ Maxx in Secaucus earlier this year tried his luck again -- unsuccessfully -- at the discount clothing retailer's location in Bayonne, authorities said.

And for the second time in four months, Joseph Cosme, 45, went for the perfume, Bayonne police Lt. Eric Amato said.

The Jersey City man was taken into custody at 2:35 p.m. July 13 at the South Cove Commons after police said he tried to steal $124.97 worth of perfume -- as he was accused of doing in Secaucus on March 6.

Cosme was charged with shoplifting. In the March 6 incident -- in which police say he tried tro steal $30 worth of perfume -- he was indicted on May 8 and arraigned on May 21. He is currently awaiting trial.

Cosme has been arrested numerous times and has at least nine convictions since 1992, according to court records.

In February, he served 60 days in jail for a December 2017 incident and was given two years probation. Not long after he was released he was accused in the Secaucus incident.
