Macau | Islands District Medical Complex delays due to project complexity – Secretary for Social Affairs

Macau (MNA) – The Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Alexis Tam stated that delays in the development of the future Islands District Medical Complex in Cotai were due to the project’s ‘complexity’, a note from his office issued on Monday indicated.

‘The hospital project is very different from a normal building due to its complexity and its many requirements. Therefore, any modification to the project requires the approval of more than ten competent public services or authorities, such as the Fire Department, Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA), Transport Bureau (DSAT), CEM, Macao Water, among others, which of course requires more time for its approval,’ the Secretary indicated in the note.

The Secretary also added that the overall project design had been approved with the list of works needed handed over to the Infrastructure Development Office (GDI) for the purpose of contracting companies to proceed with development, and therefore, any completion date must be defined by the Land, Public Works and Transport Bureau (DSSOPT).

Last week the Secretary for Transport and Public Works Raimundo Arrais do Rosário said that the public tender for the construction of three of the complex’s buildings, including the main hospital, would be announced this week.

Planning for the new health complex started in 2009, with the project including seven buildings – six building in the first phase of development and one on the second – of which only the Nursing College has already started construction works.
