Sterling Police Department arrests man on slew of driving charges

Oct. 18

At 5:32 p.m. Steven Lloyd Maxwell, 29, of Sterling, was arrested in the 100 block of N. Ninth Ave. on charges of harassment – phone/computer and domestic violence.

Oct. 17

At 1:15 a.m. Alexander Levon Alcal, 21, of Sterling, was arrested at County Road 34 and 39 on charges of three counts of theft — $50 to $300, two counts of robbery, three counts of reckless endangerment, misdemeanor menacing, driving under the influence, DUI per se, obstructing a peace officer, reckless driving, two counts of vehicular assault, three counts of vehicular eluding, three counts of eluding or attempting to elude a police officer, speeding 40 mph or more over the limit, 38 counts of failure to stop at a sign, two counts of driving the wrong way on a one-way street/alley, failure to turn from a turn lane only, failure to drive in a designate lane. Illegal possession/consumption of alcohol by a minor, driving with an open alcohol container in the vehicle, driving a vehicle without a valid license, four counts of failure to stop for a red light, two counts of violation of a protection order, unsafe tire, improper use of flashing turn signal and damage to highway structure.

At 8:52 a.m. police responded to the 1100 block of Platte St. for a report of theft. A 2013 Hyundai Sonata, valued at $10,182.20, was stolen. Also stolen with the car was a dark brown wallet, valued at $15; a tan wallet, valued at $15; a driver’s license; and medical insurance cards.

At 7:23 a.m. police responded to the 1100 block of Kings Ct. for a report of motor vehicle theft. A 2002 Dodge Caravan with a passenger sliding door that won’t lock automatically, valued at $1,300, was stolen. Also stolen with the car was a Kukri knife in the driver door, valued at $43; black/red/yellow three ton floor jack, valued at $1; tools in Dewalt toolbox and tools in a Craftsman toolbox, valued at $300; miscellaneous clothes, chairs and a backpack, valued at $10; and a black trifold wallet with $65 in cash, a Colorado ID, debit and SNAP card and two kids Social Security cards, valued at $65.

Oct. 16

At 5:13 p.m. Samantha Alyssa Latona, 22, of Sterling, was arrested in the 300 block of Hays Ave. on a warrant out of SPD for failure to appear.

At 6:56 a.m. a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Arlyn Gibbs, 65, of Sterling, was stopped at the eastbound stop sign at Clark St. and N. Seventh Ave. A 2006 Chrysler Sebring, driven by a Sterling minor was northbound on N. Seventh Ave. The Chevrolet attempted to make a left turn onto N. Seventh Ave. and its front right corner collided with the left rear corner of the Chrysler. No injuries were reported. Both vehicles sustained slight damage. Gibbs was cited for failure to yield at stop intersection.

Oct. 14

At 11:59 a.m. police responded to Bomgaars, 102 N. 12th Ave., for a report of theft. Two hoodies and a jacket, valued at $200, were stolen.

At 11 a.m. a 2004 Ford Mustang, driven by Keith Garner, 60, of Sterling, was driving northbound in the 400 block of N. Fifth St. The vehicle proceeded through the intersection of N. Fifth St. and Walnut St. and failed to maintain the lane, driving off the right side of the road/shoulder and collided with the utility pole in the 500 block of N. Fifth ST. Garner drove home after the accident, but his left front bumper was left on the roadway. No injuries were reported. The vehicle sustained moderate damage. Garner was cited for failure to maintain lane.

At 5:26 p.m. a 2014 Ram 3500, driven by Jose Guevarra, 20, of Sterling, was traveling east in the 400 block of Main St. approaching Fourth St. A 2004 Ford Explorer, driven by David Lorenzo, 49, of Sterling, was stopped in traffic. The front bumper of the Ram collided with the rear bumper of the Ford. No injuries were reported. Both vehicles sustained slight damage. Guevarra was cited for following too closely.

Oct. 13

At 9:53 a.m. a 2001 Chrysler 300, driven by Karon Johnson, 77, of Julesburg, was traveling westbound on W. Main St. approaching N. Third Ave. A 2007 Toyota Camry, driven by Lynn Zemanek, 63, of Sterling, was traveling northbound on N. Third Ave. approaching W. Main St. The Chrysler failed to comply with the red light and entered the intersection, impacting the passenger side of the Toyota. Both vehicles sustained severe damage. No injuries were reported. Johnson was cited for failure to stop at a stop intersection.

Aug. 31

At 11:35 a.m. police responded to Reata Travel Stop, 2170 E. Chestnut St., for a report of forgery. Approximately $1,458 in cash was collected from four fraudulent checks.
