Community notes: Highways ‘town hall’ planned

USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin

Highways ‘town hall’ scheduled

Officials from around the county are expected to highlight highway and other transportation-related issues at a “Just Fix It” meeting in downtown Sheboygan this month.

The meeting, part of a statewide campaign targeting transportation issues in counties across Wisconsin, will run 6:30-9 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Sheboygan County Health and Human Services Department building, 1011 N. Eighth St.

The meeting will highlight trends in transportation costs and state funding to cover them, along with transportation needs — and the cost to address them — in several of the cities, villages and townships in the county.

Similar meetings, billed by the Wisconsin County Highway Association as “town hall”-style programs, are slated to run in other counties around Wisconsin the same day. They’re all part of the state’s Turnout for Transportation campaign aimed at highlighting highway and other transportation-related issues.

The highway association, which is helping push the events, has more information at wiscohwy.org.

People who won’t be voting at usual polling places can mail in absentee ballots, or cast an absentee ballot in person at Village Hall, but deadlines apply:

  • Voters have to file an application asking for an absentee ballot. They can do so by mail through Nov. 3.
  • People can also request and submit an absentee ballot in person at the Cleveland Village Hall, 1150 W. Washington Ave., from 10 a.m.-noon and 12:30-4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays — or by appointment — until Nov. 3.

Lawmakers reap grocers’ praise

Two Oostburg state legislators are earning praise from the Wisconsin Grocers Association.

State Sen. Devin LeMahieu and State Rep. Terry Katsma, both Republicans, are earning “Friend of Grocers” awards, the association said. They’re scheduled to receive the awards Sept. 27 at different sites.

LeMahieu will get his award at 10 a.m. that morning at Kohler’s Woodlake Market. Katsma’s award will come at 11 a.m. at Sheboygan Falls’ Piggly Wiggly.

The awards go to lawmakers whose work in the state Legislature is deemed beneficial to the grocery industry by the grocers association.

Winery plans fall fest

A local winery is planning a toast to the changing seasons this weekend.

The Blind Horse’s yearly autumn Harvest Festival — billed as a “last hurrah” to summer — will run 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at 6018 Superior Ave., in Kohler.

The daylong event is expected to include live music, a craft sale, a tour of the winery and a grape-stomping competition.

The Sheboygan County Farm Bureau will hold its annual meeting Oct. 11 at a downtown Plymouth restaurant.

A guest speaker will start the program at 7:15 p.m. at Antoinette’s in Plymouth. Dinner is at 7:30 p.m., and the meeting follows. Bureau members are invited to the decision-making get-together.
