In a season that has brought 25 tries, Ryan Shaw has certainly played his part in helping Hull KR to promotion to the Super League.

There have been the acrobatic finishes, the simple touchdowns and the interceptions, but of all his scores in 2017, none was as important or had the type of resonance of the sight of the winger racing away from the Widnes defence to put Rovers within sight of the promised land.

Jamie Ellis may have missed the conversion to Shaw’s score late in the crucial Super League Qualifiers tie, but the try itself was enough to bring a little breathing room in a 12-6 victory.

“I was just relieved to get over the line. We needed that try and it was just relief when I crossed over,” Shaw told the Mail. “That’s the most important try I’ve scored all season and I’d take that one over any of the other 24 I’ve scored.”

Comfortably Rovers’ top try-scorer this year, Shaw’s contribution in the outside backs has been massive to helping his side bounce straight back from relegation.

With the celebrations finally winding down and attention turning to Catalans Dragons on Friday evening and the final home game of the season, the KR players are trying to get their game face on once again.

But while the season is still not finished, Shaw can’t help but already be looking ahead to next February and an opportunity to run out in Super League.

“It’s massive for me to be playing Super League, that’s where I always wanted to play and I cannot wait for it to come now,” he added. “Hopefully I’ll have a good season next year too and can keep scoring tries.”
