EXCLUSIVE: Fred Hurt (aka Dakota Fred) and his son Dustin Hurt from Discovery’s reality series Gold Rush will be the subject of All That Glitters, a new documentary currently filming in Haines, Alaska and directed by Kirk Roos, producer of The Brass Teapot and Matt Walsh’s comedy directorial canon High Road and the upcoming A Better You. Doc focuses on some plot elements that were left unresolved on Gold Rush pertaining to the Hurts’ obsession with diverting a waterfall in their quest for the legendary Porcupine Creek mines on the Dalton/Klondike trail.
All That Glitters is an opportunity for Dakota Fred and his crew to take their search for gold under a new light. Doc is set to be a rather challenging project as they will be battling against the brutality of Alaska’s mother nature, not to mention, the financial impact it will make on their pocketbooks, which is a very high risk to them personally, and often misunderstood. Filming is expected to last until next spring due to the gold mining process.
Roos, who made the PBS documentary American Herro about a Kurdish girl’s monumental journey from Iraq to the U.S., exclaimed about his attraction to All That Glitters, “At 71, Fred’s story is one of survival and perseverance. There’s a human nature element at play here, and more than just gold mining.” Dakota Fred, who has been known as the bigger than life dreamer, and sometimes nemesis on Gold Rush, said about his departure from the show, “It was time for me to venture off into something more realistic, and I left the show on my own terms, and that’s all I can say. Now we are going to show some true-life excursions my son and I are tackling.” Peder Rice, a commercial producer, and friend of the Hurts, will be making his first venture into feature length projects with All That Glitters, added, “Fred and Dustin have a loyal following, the fans are looking forward to their progress, and in reality shows there’s only so much room to explore backstory and details, so capturing this waterfall diversion in this documentary is key.” All That Glitters will be produced by Rice’s PR&A Communications, and Roos’ Badlands Features. Roos is repped by Michael Weiss at Abrams Garfinkel Margolis Bergson, LLP.
