Passengers on a DC metro train helped foil a kidnapping during the Wednesday morning commute after a woman reportedly tried to snatch a two-year-old girl from her stroller.

An unidentified woman was on the city's Orange Line around 9.20am when she allegedly tried to take a toddler who was with her mother on a trip from Virginia to Maryland, according to police.

The suspect, who would not give her name to authorities, was charged as 'Jane Doe' with attempted abduction after being subdued by passengers and arrested at the Foggy Bottom station.

Witnesses said that the woman was large and that at least four men were needed to restrain her.

They said that one man in particular who responded early to the incident deserves credit for stopping the abduction.

Sherri Ly, a spokesman for the DC Metro, told Daily Mail Online that witnesses told police that the suspect had been walking up and down the train car speaking to herself before a sudden attempt to take the child.

'Don’t touch my daughter. Let go of my daughter,' the child's mother said, witness Tara Young told the Washington Post.

The young girl was strapped across the chest, which helped prevent the would-be abductor from taking her.

After passengers were frustrated by attempts to use the scratchy intercom and had difficulty speaking with the operator, someone ran up to the first car of the train at Foggy Bottom and told them to stop.

One Metro police officer had been heading to Foggy Bottom at the time and was able to quickly take the suspect into custody, Ly told Daily Mail Online.

Witnesses reported that a larger group of officers arrived 20 minutes later.

Ly said early Wednesday evening that police were fingerprinting the suspect and still working to identify her.
