Victor Ortiz and Robert Guerrero both game to prove who’s “Cali’s best”

ortiz34By Dallas Orysiuk It has been nearly a year since “Vicious” Victor Ortiz has been in the ring. In his last outing, in an exciting fight, Ortiz squared off with the heavy underdog Josesito Lopez who was supposed to be an easy walk through for Ortiz.

We all know how that turned out…. slightly up on the judges score cards, Ortiz was forced to quit when he could no longer continue due to a broken jaw that he sustained early on in the fight. Ortiz lost by a 9th round RTD.

Robert “the Ghost” Guerrero is also coming off a defeat, a decisive unanimous decision loss to Floyd Mayweather. With both welterweights promoted by Golden Boy, and Ortiz slated to return in the fall this fight would be an easy fight to make. Both fighters agree.

Guerrero tweeted a screenshot of what looked to be text messages between the two fighters. Guerrero who is always up for a tough challenged texted “Man up Vic lets see who’s Cali’s best.” Ortiz responded “Im up for it.” A few more texts were exchanged with both fighters seemingly game for the fight. Guerrero went further to say, “Mosleys old and done u want Floyd rematch come prove it beat me…”. I agree with Guerrero saying Moley is old and done, and s fight between these two would be much better. To see the conversation: https://twitter.com/GHOSTBOXING/status/344269654761537537/photo/1

Both fighters have been in with Floyd Mayweather and both came up short. Although the fight ended earlier and was filled with controversy, Ortiz was arguably doing much better than Guerrero did. It was early in the fight and Mayweather was just warming up, but Ortiz was finding his way by pushing Mayweather back into the ropes and tagging him. But in the process, Floyd was having his way, tagging the southpaw Ortiz with the right hand. Guerrero, also a southpaw, was embarrassed by Floyd Mawyeather. Although in the fight, “the Ghost” never stopped fighting, but was easily out-boxed by Floyd and also repeatedly tagged by the right hand.

Besides coming up short on a few occasions, both fighters have been successful so far in their careers, and both fighters have been in their share of entertaining fights. Stylistically this could be a barn burner. The only problem for this fight is, coming of surgery to repair a brutally broken jaw, and out of the ring for at least 15 months, will a fight with Guerrero be too tough for Ortiz’s comeback fight? Ideally, I would like to see Ortiz take a soft touch to ensure his jaw is okay and to boost his confidence.

Regardless of the questions of his heart, and weak mind, Ortiz is an entertaining fighter and you never know what to expect when he’s in the ring. Guerrero is a skilled boxer who can box or brawl and brings it in every fight. With these two fighters it would be hard to predict a winner besides us as fans. If this fight gets made, it is another solid fight added to our list of exciting fights to finish 2013.
