UPDATE: LaPorte County police name cyclist killed in crash

LA PORTE COUNTY — Police have named the man hit and killed in LaPorte County Tuesday night as 30-year-old Drew Schmidt from Valparaiso.

An area of U.S. 421 in LaPorte County is back open following the deadly crash.

Deputies say a Michigan City man hit Schmidt riding a bike in front of Purdue North Central.

According to the LaPorte County coroner's office, toxicology testing indicated that Schmidt had opioids in his system.

Deputies say the cyclist was in the middle of the northbound lane of US 421 at the time of the crash. The cyclist did not have any reflective clothing or gear on.

They also say the area is dark, with no street lights.
