Traip football coach praises team's toughness in loss

DIXFIELD, Maine — The Traip Academy football team earned the applause of its first-year head coach on Friday, finishing Friday’s Class E game with 13 healthy players in a 40-14 loss at Dirigo High School.

“I’ve never been around a tougher group of kids,” Traip coach Dave Bryant said.

Kevin Mckenney took a kickoff return 80 yards to the house for the Rangers. Bobby Lane scored the other Traip touchdown on a 7-yard run; Lane then rushed in the 2-point conversion.

Traip moved to 1-2 on the season. It’s scheduled to host Sacopee Valley next Saturday.

FOOTBALL

Marshwood 22, Greely 0

CUMBERLAND CENTER, Maine — The Hawks won their 15th consecutive game, leading 15-0 at halftime and adding the game’s lone score in the second half to finish off Greely (1-2).

Marshwood improved to 3-0 in Class B South. The Hawks will travel to Skowhegan next Friday.

Biddeford 44, Noble 21

BIDDEFORD, Maine — The Knights (2-1) dropped their first Class B South game of the season.

Biddeford (2-1) scored touchdowns on its first two drives and added a score on a punt return to go ahead 18-0. Noble trailed 24-7 at halftime and 37-14 after three.

The Knights will host Westbrook next Friday.

BOYS SOCCER

St. Thomas 3, Laconia 3, tie

LACONIA — Jackson Maness forced overtime, scoring in the 79th minute, and the Saints battled the Sachems through two scoreless overtime periods for this Division III draw.

St. Thomas moved to 3-2-1. Ben Stonis scored off a Maness assist in the first half, and Aaron Broom headed home a Maness cross for the other STA goals. Max Valenzuela assisted on the equalizer.

Goalie Chase Gagnon made five saves for STA, which hosts Derryfield next Friday.

Oyster 2, Merrimack Valley 1

DURHAM — Reed Leader scored the game-winner in the 70th minute on a blast from 35 yards out to lift the Bobcats in Division II action. Oyster River (6-1) won its sixth straight.

Trailing 1-0 at the half, Max Lewis tied it up in the 50th minute off an assist from Tucker Henry.

OR travels to ConVal Wednesday.

Winnacunnet 2, Salem 1

HAMPTON — Chaz Ziolkowski's goal, assisted by Gavin O'Hara, with less than 2 minutes remaining was the difference in Division I action.

Jake Murray scored an unassisted goal in the first half for Winnacunnet, which got seven saves from goalie Nathan Todaro.

Parker Kirby, Dan Ciolfi, Nick Merrick and Abel Ravencraft played well for Winnacunnet (2-3). Salem dropped to 2-3.

Freeport 2, York 1

FREEPORT, Maine — Nick Rainforth, off a free kick by Dillon Brodsky, scored the lone goal for York in this Class B South defeat.

The Wildcats dropped to 2-2-1. They’ll travel to Wells Monday.

GIRLS SOCCER

Traip 4, St. Dom’s 2

KITTERY, Maine — Freshman Molly Sawtelle scored all four goals to help the Rangers roll to 4-0 in Class C South. St. Dominic dropped to 3-1.

Sydney Auclair assisted on two of Sawtelle’s strikes. Kathleen McPherson and Jennifer McCluskey each added helpers.

Traip travels to Sacopee Tuesday.

Prospect Mountain 4, St. Thomas 3

DOVER — Chelsea Cooper had two goals and an assist for the Saints, who fell to 3-2-1 in Division III.

Morgan Atwell chipped in a goal and an assist for STA. Goalie Ava Perfilio posted nine saves.

The Saints host Conant on Tuesday.

Winnacunnet 3, Salem 0

SALEM — Tess Rodgers netted two goals to help the Warriors climb to 4-1 in Division I.

Keelyn McNamara also scored for WHS, while Brooke McErlain had an assist. Goalie Kennedy McCarthy made three saves.

The Warriors will host Dover Tuesday.

Hillsboro-Deering 4, Somersworth 3, OT

HILLSBORO — Becca Pinnice scored a hat trick in defeat for the Hilltoppers, who moved to 1-4 in Division III. Hillsboro-Deering moved to 3-3 after Friday’s golden goal in overtime.

Jillian Haley was a leader in the midfield for Somersworth, which will host Hopkinton Tuesday.

Exeter 4, Alvirne 2

HUDSON — Brynn Roberts scored two goals and Ella Frazier had a goal and an assist to help lift the Blue Hawks in a tough road game. Exeter improved to 4-1 in Division I while Alvirne dropped to 2-3.

Chloe Henriksen also scored for Exeter. Emma Vaillancourt and Jensen Casassa each had assists. The Blue Hawks travel to Timberlane Monday.

GOLF

OR goes 2-1 at Nippo Lake

BARRINGTON — Jacob Fradillada scored a Stableford score of 24 and Jack Poitras added a 23 at Nippo Lake Golf Club to help Oyster River improve to 9-5 in Division II.

Kennett won the match with a 108, edging OR’s 107. Coe-Brown (87) was third followed by Miflord (56).

Declan Daubney (21), Ben Robar (20) and Ty Mountain (19) were other Oyster River leaders.

Coe-Brown (2-14) was paced by Cole Perra (21), Aidan Perra (19), Zach Sheehan (17), Alex Davidson (15) and Jaques Dubois (15).

VOLLEYBALL

Oyster River 3, Manchester West 0

MANCHESTER — Cassidy Gibb had seven kills and the Bobcats won in set scores of 25-14, 25-8, 25-12 to improve to 6-0 atop Division II.

Setter Kathryn Cohen also had a solid nice with eight aces and 13 assists. The Bobcats will host unbeaten Gilford on Tuesday.

Newfound 3, PCA 0

DOVER — The Eagles dropped to 0-4 in Division III in set scores of 25-21, 25-13, 25-7.

Becca Jones paced the PCA hitters with five kills. Lindsey Hatfield was solid all-around with three kills and three digs. Alicia O’Neil added nine assists and six digs.

The Eagles host Nute on Monday.

Dover 3, Manchester Central 0

MANCHESTER — The Green Wave stayed undefeated in Division I in set scores of 25-10, 25-14, 25-14.

Kyra Cantwell had seven kills and Lindsay Donahue added six for Dover. Caitlin Quinn piled up 21 assists. Sierra Castonguay had five aces. Dover improved to 5-0 and will host Hollis-Brookline Monday.

Londonderry 3, Winnacunnet 1

LONDONDERRY — The Warriors won the first set, 25-21, but dropped the next three, 25-16, 25-18, 25-23 in this Division I contest.

Junior Audrey Williams led Winnacunnet with 15 kills, while Emily Wheeler had 12 and Sarah Taylor had 40 assists. Winnacunnet fell to 0-5.

CROSS COUNTRY

York boys 2nd to Greely

CUMBERLAND, Maine — Griffin McNamara placed fifth in 18:06, and teammate Eli Hulstrom finished right behind him in sixth (18:09) as the YHS boys cross country team took second in a four-team meet Friday.

Matthew Todd won the race in 17:33 for Greely, which won the meet with 21 points. York was second with 49 points, followed by Lake Region (83) and Waynflete (93).

York also got points from Brady Harrod (18:25; 9), Josiah Mackaman (19:17; 14) and Joe Neal (19:22; 15).

MIDDLE SCHOOL FIELD HOCKEY

Portsmouth 0, CMS 0, tie

PORTSMOUTH — PMS and Cooperative ended in a hard-fought stalemate Friday. Portsmouth goalie Samara Buck had 13 saves. Mia Edwards and Georgia Hodgdon were leaders in the midfield, while Ariyana Greene and Melissa Gaudreau played well defensively. PMS moved to 1-1-1 on the season.
