ADELANTO, Calif. (AP) — An off-roader’s discovery of an unattended vehicle in the Mojave Desert led to the discovery of an elderly couple missing for four days. The woman was alive; her husband was dead.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s coroner’s division says a person riding a quad bike found the Ford Fusion on Saturday afternoon in open desert near Adelanto and called 911 at 5:24 p.m.

A deputy determined the vehicle was related to a missing-persons report filed Tuesday for Pauline and Keith Davis. They were last seen at their home in Palmdale, about 45 miles west of Adelanto.

Deputies searched the area and found Pauline Davis, 91. She was taken to a hospital for treatment. The body of Keith Davis, 87, was found at 8:47 p.m. in open desert.

The missing-persons report noted that Keith Davis had dementia and his wife has hearing and vision loss.
