Hokies host High Point Tuesday, head to Marshall Wednesday

Last week the Hokies had a five-game week and went 4-1 and have won 5-of-7.

BLACKSBURG – Coming off back-to-back ACC road trips, the Virginia Tech baseball team will return home for back-to-back ACC home weekends, starting with hosting No. 9 North Carolina this upcoming weekend.
 
However, before facing the Tar Heels, Tech will play a pair of midweek games – one at English Field at Union Park Tuesday versus High Point and the other against Marshall, at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, W.Va. – with both starting at 4 p.m.
 
Tech enters the midweek games with a 13-6 overall record and evened its conference record at 3-3 with a road ACC series win at Pittsburgh last weekend, its first since 2014. Last week the Hokies had a five-game week and went 4-1 and have won 5-of-7.

Quick notes on the High Point contest
  • High Point enters the weekend with a 6-11 record and are coming off a Big South weekend series versus Campbell, in which they were swept. The series was actually played Saturday through Monday, so the Panthers actually played yesterday and dropped the third game in the set 8-2. High Point lost the opener 13-8 and the Game 2 8-6.
  • Tech's all-time series against High Point is owned by the Hokies, who hold a 22-6-1 edge and are 6-2-1 at home.
  • The Hokies have won six in a row against High Point, have won 10-of-11 and includes back-to-back extra-inning games in 2005.
  • In the last meeting, Tech defeated the Panthers by an 11-4 count, on May 8, 2013 and have scored at least nine runs in the last four meetings.
  • The Panthers last won a game in the series on March 12, 2003, a 7-5 decision in Blacksburg.
  • The two teams did play an exhibition game in the fall – on October 5 – with High Point taking the contest 17-7.

Quick notes on the Marshall contest
  • Marshall enters the Wednesday game with a 12-6 mark, and the team has won 8-of-9 including its first Conference USA series over the weekend against Florida International.
  • After dropping the opener Friday, 3-0, the Herd won Saturday's game 16-5 and Sunday 7-4.
  • Marshall is 7-2 this season at home games played in Huntington, but this one will be contested at Appalachian Power Park.
  • Tech is just as successful in this series, holding a 26-9 overall mark against the Herd and that includes a 3-1 mark since the teams renewed the rivalry in 2017 and a 2-0 mark under head coach John Szefc.
  • Before the last four meetings, the teams had not played a game since 2006.
  • Tech won both games last year against Marshall on back-to-back days in April, 11-3 in Blacksburg (4/10) and 11-9 in Charleston (4/11).
  • On the road, Tech has a slight edge in the series at 7-5.
