Raising funds for cancer research

The Lynbrook Relay For Life event was held on May 19 and saw a turnout of more than 500 participants. From afternoon and into the night, $75,000 was raised for cancer research, treatment and patient-family services.

“Everybody has in some way been touched by cancer,” said Judy Wichter, director of special events for the Nassau region of the American Cancer Society, “so for communities to come together and take a stand for one night is just an incredible thing.”

A suvivors’ dinner was held before the event for those who have previously battled the disease, are undergoing cancer treatment or are newly diagnosed. All food was donated by local businesses, Glickman said, and is free for participants.

During the relay, candles in luminaria bags are lit to honor loved ones who have died or are fighting cancer. Toward the end of the event, relay participants will pledge to take action and spread awareness of cancer research, treatment and prevention in a “Fight Back” ceremony.

Wichter said the American Cancer Society is still accepting donations until the end of August. Interested parties can send their donations to: Lynbrook Relay For Life, c/o American Cancer Society, 75 Davids Drive, Hauppauge, NY 11788
