Academics

' Sewanee's Owen Legrone added a biggie to the achievements of his senior year as a cross country and track distance runner by being listed Tuesday as a Google Cloud Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Legrone was a second-team Division III selection. He was all-region in cross country with a school-record 25:31.9 for eight kilometers. "Owen Legrone is a great representation of what an NCAA Division III athlete should be," coach Jeff Heitzenrater said in a Sewanee release. "His hard work in the classroom, on the track and trails and in every aspect of his college career is a fantastic example for future student-athletes at Sewanee."

' The Sewanee women's and men's swimming and diving teams were selected as College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association Scholar-America teams for the 49th consecutive semester. The Sewanee women had an aggregate 3.47 grade point average, the men a 3.33.

' Covenant College had 76 members of the USA South all-academic honorees for 2017-18, including 11 "with distinction" for GPAs of 3.90 or better for both semesters. The women's soccer and baseball teams led Covenant with 13 all-academic athletes each; that GPA minimum is 3.30.

Basketball

' Jerriale Jackson is the third girls' player from Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School to sign to play basketball in 2018-19 for Georgia Northwestern Technical College. She also was on the LFO volleyball and track teams but said basketball was the sport she "wasn't ready to give up." The GNTC opportunity, she said, "means I get to further my education, plus I still get the ability to play basketball." She was a three-year team captain for the Lady Warriors. "She's played whatever role we needed her to play," LFO coach Dewayne Watkins said in a GNTC release. "She's done so many other things for us, like rebound, play defense on the other team's best player, handle the ball and push the tempo, (and) she has the capability (to be a good scorer). Plus she's an awesome leader. She graduated with honors, so she's great in the classroom and she's a great teammate." Said the Lady Bobcats' David Stephenson: "We're getting another athletic person who can play multiple spots for us on the floor and help us on the press."
