1. Sorry Is Gone. In July of last year, singer/songwriter Jessica Lea Mayfield went public about her abusive husband. She posted a photo on Instagram, writing “Last week I had a surgery related for a broken shoulder related to a domestic violence incident.” In September, she released her fourth album, Sorry is Gone. It’s a deeply personal record about enduring and escaping her marriage.

2. A seasoned pro at 28. Mayfield began performing with her family’s bluegrass band, One Way Rider, when she was eight. She began writing songs and playing guitar at 11, and recorded her first album when she was 15.

3. The Black Keys. A copy of that first album fell into the hands of Dan Auerbach. The Black Keys frontman was so impressed that he produced her official debut, 2008’s With Blasphemy So Heartfelt. The album earned raves. At least one publication named Mayfield Best New Artist of 2008.

4. You might have heard her. Mayfield’s songs have made it onto Gossip Girl (Kiss Me Again) and CSI: NY (Bible Days) as well as two Starbucks compilations. She can also be heard on the Black Keys’ 2007 album Attack & Release, and on Auerbach’s 2009 solo album, Keep It Hid.

5. Rocking out. According to a review of a December show in Brooklyn, Mayfield and her three-piece band are playing up the new album’s tougher edges. “Save for a short solo and duet set with her drummer Patrick Damphier, Mayfield’s performance was all loud rock and roll,” according to glidemagazine.com.
