Free medical, dental screenings given at health fair in Saginaw

SAGINAW, MI -- Great Lakes Bay Health Centers hosted its Community Health Fair in Saginaw Friday, Aug. 17.

The event took place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. outside at the David R. Gamez Health Center, 501 Lapeer Ave. Children and their families received free medical and dental screenings in the new "Smiles Are Everywhere" mobile dental unit, just in time to head back to school.

As of about noon, dozens of people were there, despite periods of heavy rainfall. In total, more than 800 people, including patients, vendors and volunteers, attended the event, said spokesman Jeffrey Reinarz.

Organizers gave away 25 bikes to children and teens, about 50 backpacks filled with school supplies and a "semi full of fresh produce," he said.

The health fair was supported by Henry Schein Cares' flagship program, Healthy Lifestyles, Healthy Communities, which provided a $5,000 grant, as well as medical and dental supplies valued at $5,000.

The event also featured food, educational information, access to community resources and fun, healthy activities.
