WASILLA — Since the Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches began hosting its annual senior all-star games nearly a decade ago, interest across the state has steadily grown. Now that interest has stretched beyond the 49th state.
More than 20 college coaches are expected to attend the eighth annual all-star games Saturday at the Wells Fargo Center in Anchorage.
“It’s becoming that the (college) coaches just expect it’s one of the things we do,” AABC president Dave Porter said earlier this week.
And that’s an expectation Porter and his colleagues within the association gladly accept. It aligns with AABC’s vision for the games, Porter said, designed as a way to showcase Alaska’s top seniors to college coaches.
“You look at all of these schools. The keep coming up, and more keep coming,” Porter said. “Not only are they selecting (Alaska players), but those kids are doing really well for them. A number of them are tearing it up.”
Porter said seeing Alaska all-stars commit to colleges each year is a reward.
“It’s neat to see. One of the biggest things about the all-star game is kids are going to get seen,” Porter said.
A handful of Valley players are among the athletes who will hit the floor Saturday. Wasilla’s Reilly Devine and Jordan Knights, Colony’s Will Freeman, Houston’s Riley Davis, Redington’s Courtney Crockett, Susitna Valley’s Cody Morgan and Wasilla Lake Christian’s Jaden Kurtz were selected to play.
There are four games on the schedule. The 1A/2A girls senior all-star game is at 2 p.m. and the 1A/2A boys all-star game follows at 3:45 p.m. The 3A/4A senior girls all-star game is at 6, and the 3A/4A senior boys all-star game follows at 7:45 p.m.
The Wells Fargo Center on the UAA campus in Anchorage is the home of the all-star games for the second straight year.
“It was phenomenal,” Porter said of the all-star games at the Wells Fargo last year. “It was pretty packed.”
Porter said the Wells Fargo is the ideal venue for the event.
AABC adds three to its hall of fame
The AABC will also recognize the three latest additions to its hall of fame — Don Witzel, Phil Jordan and Carlos Boozer — during the all-star festivities on Tuesday.
Witzel and Jordan are both former longtime basketball coaches in Alaska. Boozer is among the top talents to ever come out of Alaska.
During his 15 seasons as the head coach of the Colony High girls basketball program, Witzel led the Knights to 308 wins, eight region titles and four state championships. Jordan led three different programs — Service, Bartlett and Lumen Christi — to state crowns during his 40 years as a basketball coach in Alaska.
Boozer led the Juneau-Douglas boys to back-to-back state titles before helped Duke win a NCAA championship in 2001. His 15-year professional basketball career included time with four NBA teams. He also earned an Olympic gold medal with Team USA in the 2008 summer games.
