1897 Poe House: On the grounds of the Museum of the Cape Fear Complex, the house was the home of businessman E.A. Poe and his family for a century. It has been restored to its 1897 appearance. Tours are Tuesday-Friday at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m.; Saturday, hourly from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday hourly from 1-4 p.m. 910-500-4240

Heritage Square: The Sandford House, Oval Ballroom and Baker-Haigh-Nimocks House make up the museum grounds called Heritage Square. It is open for tours on an appointment basis. All three buildings are on the National Register for Historical Properties. Call 910-483-6009 to schedule a tour.

Harmony Hall Plantation: 1615 River Road, White Oak. Harmony Hall was the 1760’s era home of Col. James Richardson. Other buildings at the site include a church and a school. Search “Harmony Hall Plantation” on Facebook.

Averasboro Battlefield Museum: 3300 N.C. 82, Dunn (Exit 71 off Interstate 95). Site of the March 1865 Battle of Averasboro. The site features a museum, plus occasional re-enactments and living-history programs. 910-891-5019 or averasboro.com.

Bentonville Battlefield: 5466 Harper House Road, Four Oaks. Tour the battlefield and the historic Harper House. New walking trails give visitors greater access to the site of the battle. The Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site is at 5466 Harper House Road, Four Oaks. 910-594-0789

House in the Horseshoe: 288 Alston House Road, Sanford. The Revolutionary War era house was the site of a skirmish between Whigs and Tories in 1781.
