Rangers season review: Horrible from start to finish

The season is now over. It’s more of a relief than anything else. Unfortunately, it’s been yet another season of underachievement for Rangers. Third place in the league, not anywhere near a cup final and countless embarrassing results along the way. It’s no wonder most of the fans are glad to see the back of it and look forward to next season.

Pedro, Murty and the recruitment

Pedro: He was a disaster. In hindsight, he should have been binned after the Progres debacle and replaced with someone who knew what they were doing. I felt he was too emotionally involved in the games from the sideline. You could see that in his bust-up with Scott Brown. Yes, he was passionate and wanted to win but his temperament was all over the place. His football was boring at times, as well. However, he does deserve credit for giving young McCrorie a path into the first team. But it was right to let him go in the end.

Murty: The single biggest mistake of the season. Giving the job until the end of the season to a weak-willed loser turned out disastrous – even worse than Pedro’s stint. His failure to change a game. Then, almost cry in post-match interviews as he looked to garner sympathy from the fans was embarrassing. When he was eventually sacked, it was like a weight being lifted from my shoulders. I hope we don’t see him at the club in any capacity ever again.

The signings: The signings where a bit of a mixed bag. Having said that, I felt Candeias, Morelos, Jack and Murphy all done over their respective time at the club this season. However, the Mexicans were a disaster. Fabio Cardoso struggled with the physical aspect of the game before being bombed out by Murty and Bruno Alves and Dorrans disappointed.

Embarrassing results and performances

The poor results were a constant in our season. It started with Progres and ended up with us conceding five at Easter Road. However, the games that hurt the most were the two Celtic defeats – 4-0 and 5-0. Those two matches sealed the fate of the majority of the squad. They still should be ashamed out the way they performed in those two games. However, losing 10 league matches will never ever be good enough for this club. Eight of them were under Murty so that tells you a lot about why he is no longer in his job.

Conclusion: Must do better

To sum it up, it was pathetic from us. The hope for next season is that we will improve and have players who can handle playing with the pressure and expectation of this club. If any of the current players think this season has been acceptable, they can leave right now. It’s not been good enough from anyone: the board, the ‘managers’ and the players. They all should hang their heads in shame at the results we have had to endure. Thank goodness it’s over.
