6 Volumizing Shampoos Everyone With Fine, Flat Hair Needs to Try

Here's a lesson that took many conversations with hairstylists for me to learn: Voluminous hair isn't always soft and touchable hair. Sometimes, you need a little texture to build that height and create that oomph in your slippery strands. And though texturizing sprays work well, you can also start the texture-building process in the shower. This formula uses diatomaceous earth to absorb hair-flattening oils while adding a bit of grit to strands, too.

This volumizer is kind of like a mix between a body scrub and a shampoo. Stay with me, here. The gritty formula contains chunks of sea salt that are meant to exfoliate your scalp (cleaner roots = more voluminous hair), while leaving behind a realistic ocean-y texture. Working it through the lengths of your hair takes a little getting used to—it's hella thick—but the beach-y  volume left in your hair will be worth it. 

I'm a huge fan of the whole Thickening line by Bumble and Bumble, and for good reason: It genuinely works. Instead of relying on heavy hydrators, which can weigh down hair, this volumizing shampoo uses panthenol (aka pro-vitamin B5) to push moisture deep into your hair strand for a weightless bounce. 

If your fine curls always fall flat, try this texture-boosting formula, which uses hydrolyzed silk (hydrolyzed means it's in a smaller liquid form that allows it to better penetrate the hair shaft), green tea, and aloe to hydrate your coils. And that, in turn, will leave your curls ultra bouncy, defined, and, most importantly, moisturized.  

When you want big hair, look no further than the south. (Okay, fine, maybe that's just a stereotype, but I'm pretty sure a few Southern belles could actually show you a trick or two). Let me stress that this shampoo is not for everyone. It has a blend of proteins and bamboo extract that'll leave naturally soft, slippery hair with a ton of volume-boosting structure fresh out of the shower. But if your hair tangles easily, or you don't like the feel of product residue, keep scrolling. 

If you love full-body volume but can't deal with gritty textures, try this classic drugstore favorite for squeaky-clean strands. It's important to note, however, that this formula does contain sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), which can strip the hair of its natural oils, so skip this one if you have curly, color-treated, or damaged hair. But, if you don't dye your hair and are constantly fighting greasy roots, these sudsy surfactants can help remove your oily residue or product buildup that weighs hair down. And hair that isn't weighed down can reach some serious heights.
