Jumaane Williams Mulls Challenge To Cuomo In 2018 Governor's Race

City Councilman Jumaane Williams has formed a campaign committee, the first step to taking on Governor Cuomo in the 2018 election.

FLATBUSH, BROOKLYN — Jumaane Williams might take on Andrew Cuomo in the race to be New York’s next governor, city records show.

Williams — the City Council member who represents Flatbush, Midwood, Canarsie — formed a campaign committee on Wednesday called “Jumaane 4 NY” that would allow him to run in the Democratic gubernatorial primary in 2018, according to Board of Elections records.

It won't be Williams only race — he is one of eight council members campaigning to succeed City Council Speaker Melissa Mark Viverito, whose term limit ends in January 2018.

According to the New York Post, who first reported Williams’ committee, Williams may also be facing off against former State Sen. Terry Gipson, of the Hudson Valley, Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner and “Sex and the City” star Cynthia Nixon.

Williams told the Daily News in August that despite several people asking him to run for governor, he was focusing on the race to be speaker. But he didn't discount the possibility, either.

Said Williams, “It's hard in politics to use the ‘never’ word."
