Blackhawks avert disaster in win over Arizona

Lance Bouma scored the game-winning goal in Arizona with 4:24 remaining and the Blackhawks escaped with a 4-2 victory over the still-winless Coyotes on Saturday.

Richard Panik, Patrick Kane and Tommy Wingels also tallied for the Hawks, while Corey Crawford made 27 saves. Wingels, who had a successful penalty shot overturned in the second period, scored into an empty net with 59.4 seconds remaining.

Bouma pounced on a loose puck after a Duncan Keith pass deflected off Wingels' stick and floated into four bodies that were right in front of Arizona goaltender Louis Domingue.

"That's what we have to do as a line is get to that blue paint," Bouma told reporters. "When we do that, we get chances. Obviously the puck kind of took a couple deflections and hit me in front. It was nice (to see) an open net there."

Arizona had a chance to put this game away in the first period when the Hawks took four penalties and were short-handed for four straight minutes.

The insanity began when Bouma (hooking) and Wingels (interference) were both sent off at 11:10, giving Arizona a 5-on-3 power play for two minutes. Thirty-three seconds later, Jan Rutta was whistled for high-sticking.

It was a potential disaster in the making, but the Coyotes (0-7-1) did next to nothing for 70 seconds and then Max Domi did the Hawks a huge favor when he tripped Brandon Saad at 12:55. Amazingly, a fifth penalty in just over two minutes occurred when Brent Seabrook - after accidentally throwing a puck right at Crawford - was called for a slash at 13:18.

Saad, Gustav Forsling, Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith and Artem Anisimov were the penalty-killing heroes as Arizona managed 1 measly shot on goal during this stretch.

Kane gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead with 8:28 left in the second period when he beat Domingue on a breakaway, and six minutes later, Wingels appeared to make it 3-1 on his penalty shot. The goal was disallowed, however, when referees ruled the puck hit Domingue's stick before Wingels pulled the puck to his forehand and buried the shot.

"I don't know about that one," Quenneville said. "They must have had a different view because we didn't see anything that could overturn it. They must have a different angle."

Fifty seconds later, 19-year-old rookie Clayton Keller tied the game at 2-2 when he fired home a loose puck for his sixth goal of the season.

The score stayed that way until Bouma was in the right place at the right time. It was his first goal of the season and just his fifth in his last 118 games.

"We've had a few chances around the net, so definitely at that time of the game, it was a big goal," Bouma said. "It's a nice feeling, for sure, to get rewarded like that."

Lineup decisions:

Jordan Oesterle played a second straight game after sitting the first seven games of the season. Oesterle nearly scored in the second period, but his wrist shot from the point sailed just wide of the left post. … Michal Kempny, Cody Franson and Tanner Kero were healthy scratches.
