CHEVY CHASE, MD -- The construction of a new mixed-use project on Connecticut Avenue could lead to the closing of a family-owned grocery store that has served the area since 1958, according to media reports.

The owners of the Chevy Chase Lake shopping center have teamed up with another developer on plans to tear down the center and replace it with two apartment buildings and one condominium building, Bethesda Beat reported. The project would involve the creation of two new streets and a civic green.

The three new buildings would have ground-floor retail space, but it's unclear whether any space will be available for the Chevy Chase Supermarket, the Washington Business Journal reported. The family-owned store is likely to remain in the shopping center until construction begins on the project's first phase, expected in 2018.

The first phase will be the construction of a six-floor, 283-unit apartment building with a 50,000-square-foot anchor space on the ground floor for a grocery store, under plans drawn up by Chevy Chase Land Co. and its partner, Bozzuto Development Co. Chevy Chase Land Co. owns the Chevy Chase Lake shopping center.

The developers unveiled their initial plans in October, and their latest applications are expected to go to the Montgomery County Planning Board early next year, Bethesda Beat reported.
