Double J, triple j’s new digital radio station, officially kicked off today as, from a live broadcast held at Melbourne’s Kelvin Club, lead presenter Myf Warhurst spun the first tune and announced the station’s full suite of programs and presenters.

The station, which avowed to focus on new music while also celebrating the iconic tunes of the past, kicked off with Nick Cave & The Bad SeedsGet Ready For Love. The launch also featured live performances by Kate Miller-Heidke and Paul Dempsey.

In addition to Warhurst’s daily music program, Double J will also feature specialist shows hosted by alt and country singer-songwriter Emma Swift, Melbourne multi-instrumentalist and producer Tim Shiel, triple j’s own Caz Tran, influential broadcaster Karen Leng and The BamboosLance Ferguson. See the full schedule below.

Each Sunday the station will braodcast a show produced by a monthly “Artist in Residence”. The Go Betweens Robert Forster will kick off proceedings this Sunday before The Cat Empire, Adalita & Kevin Mitchell, Henry Rollins and Iggy Pop each take a turn in the driver’s seat.

“I like the idea of programming two hours of radio on a Sunday afternoon,” said Forster in a statement. “I like the free hand I have in choosing the music I can play. And I like that a station exists to play adventurous music, a lot of it made by Australian artists, deserving to be heard by as many people as possible”.

The station’s accompanying website doublej.net.au will also feature videos, reviews, illustrations an audio player, as well as quality contributions from some of the country’s most respected music journalists.
