Michigan to Head to Virginia for Non-Conference Match

» Michigan will face its sixth ranked opponent of the season in No. 13 Virginia. The Cavaliers and Wolverines are meeting for the fifth straight season.
» Michigan and Virginia are each coming off 1-2 weekends at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, with each squad winning its last match.

The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team (4-3) will head to Charlottesville to face No. 13-ranked Virginia (6-2) on Saturday (Feb. 15) at 11 a.m. It is Michigan's lone match of the week and the last match until hosting Princeton on Feb. 28.

Wolverine Bites

• The No. 12-ranked Wolverines (4-3) hit the road for their second true road match of the season, heading to No. 11-ranked Virginia (6-2) to face the Cavaliers for the fifth straight season. Michigan is in search of its first road win of the year.

• Michigan is coming off a 1-2 weekend at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship (Feb. 7-9), dropping a pair of 4-3 matches to No. 1 Stanford and No. 12 Ohio State before picking up a 4-1 victory over Illinois. Alyvia Jones and Chiara Lommer each went 3-0 on the singles court to pace the Wolverines at the event.

• U-M has quite the non-conference schedule, with the Wolverines already facing their sixth ranked opponent of the season in No. 13 Virginia. Michigan already has faced No. 1 North Carolina, No.3 Stanford, No. 10 Ohio State, No. 16 UCF and No. 24 Florida. In addition, the Wolverines are still set to square off against No. 7 Texas, No. 9 Princeton and No. 11 Pepperdine.

• Junior Alyvia Jones was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career after compiling a 3-0 singles mark and 2-0 doubles record at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. Jones picked up three straight-set wins in singles, knocking off No. 123 Janice Shin of Stanford (6-3, 6-2), Kolie Allen of Ohio State (7-6 (8), 6-1) and Josie Frazier of Illinois (6-0, 6-2). She also grabbed a pair of wins at the top doubles spot with Andrea Cerdan, beating a team from Ohio State, 6-4, and a team from Illinois, 7-5.

• Senior Chiara Lommer has hit her stride since dual-match play has started, going 4-1 in Michigan's seven matches. She has won four straight matches after falling in Michigan's first dual match of the season against Mississippi. The lefty has clinched two matches for the Maize and Blue this season, coming against UCF (Jan. 26) and Illinois (Feb. 9).

• U-M has a trio of Wolverines appearing in the latest ITA singles rankings in No. 36 Giulia Pairone, No. 51 Andrea Cerdan and No. 94 Alyvia Jones.

• Virginia (6-2) also is coming off a 1-2 weekend at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship (Feb. 7-9), falling to No. 3 Georgia and No. 6 Pepperdine before grabbing a 4-3 win over No. 14 Arizona State. The Hoos have four ranked singles players in No. 21 Natasha Subhash, No. 55 Rosie Johanson, No. 78 Amber O'Dell and No. 87 Sofia Munera. O'Dell teams up with Chloe Gullickson to form the No. 59-ranked doubles team. Virginia leads the all-time series against Michigan, 5-2, after winning a 5-2 match in Ann Arbor last season.

• Michigan will take a week off before returning to the Varsity Tennis Center to host Princeton on Feb. 28.
