Ilion, N.Y. -- The struggling Remington Arms Co. is reportedly planning to lay off 200 workers, including some at its plant in Ilion.

The (Utica) Observer-Dispatch reported Tuesday that the layoffs will occur in Ilion in Herkimer County and in Huntsville, Alabama, and Lonoke, Arkansas.

Ilion Mayor Brian Lamica told the newspaper that the Remington plant manager in the village called him Monday to alert him to the pending layoffs. It’s unclear how many workers at the Ilion plant will be laid off, the newspaper said.

Remington emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May after converting more than $775 million in debt into equity for its creditors.

Remington is one of the largest arms makers in the world, but sales in the U.S. slumped significantly after Donald Trump’s election as president eased fears among gun buyers that the federal government would restrict gun sales.

The company employs approximately 1,000 people in Ilion, where it was founded in 1816 by Eliphalet Remington as E. Remington and Sons.
