Carlisle

More than 1100 head of store cattle was entered for Harrison and Hetherington's weekly sale which was topped at £1120 by a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Forrester and Son, Cobble Hall, Penrith.

Steers peaked at £1105 for more of the same from Messrs Slack, Newby Farm, Carlisle.

Among the weaned cattle, a British Blue heifer from Messrs Thompson, High Drybarrows, led the trade at £915.

Beef breeding cattle sold at the firm's monthly sale were topped by Limousin cross heifers with heifer calves from Messrs Dickinson, High House at £1900 per unit.

And, on Monday, all classes of store and breeding sheep met a steady trade with store lambs peaking at £94 for Beltex from Well Head whilst shearling rams sold to £500 for Blue Texels from Eden Dales.

Bullocks led the way at Dingwall and Highland Marts' sale of 333 weaned and store cattle and five breeding cattle.

Bullocks calves sold to 336.6p per kg for a 205kg Limousin cross from Borve, Isle of Harris and £1160 for a pair of 637kg Simmental crosses from Ballone, Abriachan, to level at 207.9p.

Simmental crosses also topped the heifers at 242.6p from Borve, Isle of Harris, and £960 for Shorthorn crosses from Easter Street, Caplich.

Also forward were 4317 breeding and feeding sheep where gimmers led the way at £180 twice for Cheviots from Kintail, Muir of Ord and Newton of Ferintosh, Conon Bridge.

Breeding ewes averaged £62.23 and sold to £130 twice for Cheviots from Rhifail, and Rhigotter, Durness whilst feeding ewes peaked at £78 for Texel crosses from 17 Mellon Charles, Aultbea, to level at £48.41.

More Cheviots topped the ram and lambs section at £150 from 12 Bualnaluib, Aultbea and £70 from Heatherlee Croft, Ardgay, respectively.

A steady trade was met at United Auctions' sale of 949 store cattle and 136 cast cows, where bullocks and heifers averaged 190.52p and 181.85p respectively.

Bullocks sold to 233.00p per kg for 339kg Charolais crosses from Gilston, and to £1190 for a 624kg Limousin cross from Elmscleugh.

Limousin crosses from Buteland topped the heifers at 223.6p while Aberdeen-Angus crosses from Forneth peaked at £1140.

On Monday, the show and sale of 1877 suckled calves bullocks and heifers levelled at 226.55p and 212.19p respectively, with the judge, Andrew Morton, junior, Lochend, finding his champion in a 428kg heifer from A and G MacDougall, Burnbank, which went on to sell for £980. The reserve, a Charolais bullock from D and I Richardson, Upper Samieston, made £1000..

Top price per kg was 303.10p paid for the reserve champion, a Charolais cross bullock from Upper Samieston, while a 542kg British Blue from Easter Garden sold for the lead price per head of £1060.

A 311kg Limousin cross from A and I Cullens, Dollarbank, topped the heifers at 287.5p, with the champion from Burnbank selling for the lead price per head.

The 6044 store lambs sold the same day improved on the week with Suffolk crosses averaging £60.19 (+£1.04p per head), Texel crosses, £60.68 (+£1.50p), Beltex crosses, £66.50 (+£6.07p); Cheviots, £56.16 (+£11.70p); Mules £60.50 (+5.58) and Blackies at £43.57 (+£3.39p).

All classes met a buoyant demand at Craig Wilson's sale of 320 store cattle where bullocks and heifers averaged 192.5p and 182.7p respectively.

Top price was £1190 paid for a Limousin heifer from Middleton, Newton Mearns, and 224.1p for Simmentals from Ceither Gaoithe, Arran.

Bullocks peaked at £1160 for an Aberdeen-Angus from Cairnhouse, Arran and 274.7p for Charolais from Ceither Gaoithe.

Bowhouse topped the dairy-bred bullocks at £670 and 176p was paid for Norwegian Reds from Inchaparks.

Also forward were 460 store lambs which sold to £68.50 for Texels from W and M Gemmell, Drumdow.

An 18-month-old Limousin cross from TE Clarke, Howgill Castle, topped Penrith and District farmers' mart fortnightly sale of 208 store cattle and feeding bulls, selling for £1165.

Charolais topped the heifers at £1015 three times from Grassknop.

The show and sale of suckled calves saw the championship honours awarded to a Limousin heifer from Messrs Taylor, Waterhouses which later sold for £970, whilst reserve was presented to a Charolais bullock from Greystoke Castle Farm, which achieved £960.

Caledonian marts had forward 413 store cattle and suckled calves, for their fortnightly sale where store bullocks and and heifers averaged 161p and 188p respectively.

Store bullocks sold to 215p for Aberdeen Angus from Merslaugh, Stranraer and £1110 for Limousins from AL and J Blair, East Kerse, Beith.

Heifers peaked at 210p for Limousins from A McKenzie and Partners, Ardgate, Gartocharn, and to £1270 for a Simmental from K and A Graham, Easterton, Doune.

On three occasions bullock calves sold to 237p for Simmentals from W Kerr and Son, Wester Braco, Airdrie and R Kenny Jnr, Robertsonlane, Blairdrummond, and for Limousins from ML Wilson, Baluskie, Barrhill. Baluskie produced the top price per head at £1100.

Also forward were 2197 store lambs, breeding, feeding ewes and 42 tups where trade peaked at £300 for Texel tups and Suffolk crosses from AM Duncan, Easter Dullatur, Kilsyth and J and J Kinloch, Walton, Cardross respectively.

Lambs sold to £65.50 for Texels from D Sharp, Westfield, Dunfermline whilst Blackfaces topped the ewes at £52 from Ancaster Estates, East Meiger, Comrie.
