PORTLAND, Ore. – Facing steep medical bills, the family of a Portland man critically injured in a downtown stabbing is getting some support from the community.

Jakob Shroyer was put in a medically-induced coma after he was injured in a random stabbing in the Old Town/Chinatown district Monday night. The 37-year-old went through surgery on Saturday, however he remains in intensive care.

Shroyer's friends and family teamed up with Blacklist Tattoo for a fundraiser to help pay for his medical expenses.

Blacklist Tattoo artist Brynn Sladky spent about eight hours tattooing on Saturday, raising a total of $2,434 for Jakob's recovery. They have also started an online fundraiser account to help cover his medical expenses.

“It's incredible, it really is, seeing everybody come together for this is just overwhelming... awesome,” said Sladky.

On Thursday, detectives charged 33-year old Michael Lee Williams with attempted murder as a suspect in the stabbing. He was already in custody on unrelated charges.

James Dixon, a friend, said Jakob is a fighter. He thanked the doctors and nurses who have been treating Jakob at a local hospital.

"Jakob, we love you and adore you, and wish you a speedy recovery and we have faith that the attacker will be brought to justice," Dixon said.
