Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the first ODI between India and New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. (SCORECARD)

NEW ZEALAND INNINGS:

21.34 IST: New Zealand (284/4) crush India (280/8) by 6 wickets to take 1-0 lead in 3-match series. Latham 103*, Taylor 95

New Zealand have taken a 1-0 lead in the series and they have done that in some style. They have recorded the HIGHEST SUCCESSFUL RUN CHASE AT THE WANKHEDE and that should tell you how well they have played here. Chasing 281, the visitors got off to a steady start but then lost three wickets when they had just 80 on the board. Ross Taylor, the experienced campaigner and Tom Latham, their go-to man got together to keep the hosts at bay. They kept rotating strike, played the spinners to great effect and then pounced on the freebies that were on offer.

Latham and Taylor break a few records, one being the highest 4th wicket stand for New Zealand and highest for any wicket at this venue. The former got to his ton but the latter departed just when his side was at the doorstep to victory. The Indians would feel what went wrong at the halfway mark. Their pacers led the way but their spinners had no answers once the duo of Latham and Taylor got in. They tried their best but it just wasn't their day. They needed to break this stand to explode the inexperienced middle order but when that happened, the match was already dragged away from them.

21.34 IST: Bhuvi to Nicholls, FOUR! NEW ZEALAND WIN BY 6 WICKETS. What a chase it has been from the Black Caps! They are delighted as they have done something which would have shocked the world at the moment. Well done! Length ball on middle, Nicholls hoicks it over mid-wicket for a boundary.

21.32 IST: Bhuvi to Taylor, OUT! c Chahal 95 (100 balls).

Straight to the fielder! Would you believe it? Ross Taylor survived an LBW scare but now departs when his side is almost over the finish line. Fuller in length on off, Taylor smacks it hard but finds Chahal at extra cover who takes a good low catch. He walks back to a big round of applause. NZ need 1 run to win from 7 balls

21.30 IST: Bhuvi to Latham, single completes 200-run stand between the two and brings Taylor on strike. Scores are level and Taylor is 5 runs short of a hundred.

21.21 IST: Bhuvi to Latham, takes a single and gets to his fourth one-day hundred in 95 balls. Well played, Tom Latham! He came in when his side was under trouble, he was asked to bat in the middle order to strengthen it and boy, he has shown why he is banked so much. Raises his bat and sinks in all the applause that is on offer! Coming to the ball, length delivery on middle, clipped through square leg for one. NZ 274/3 in 46.3 overs, need 7 from 20 balls

21.17 IST: Bumrah to Latham, SIX! Oh Tom! You beauty! He picks the slower one and just whips this fuller ball over long on for a maximum. Simply outstanding! He moves to 99 now!

21.14 IST: Bumrah to Taylor, FOUR! And more runs! New Zealand are running away now! Another short ball on middle, Taylor swivels and pulls it towards fine leg. Kuldeep Yadav in the deep, puts in a dive, he stops but the ball still races away to the fence for a boundary.

21.14 IST: Bumrah to Taylor, FOUR! Banged! Back of a length delivery on middle, Taylor dances down the track and pulls it with authority over mid-wicket for a boundary.

21.13 IST: New Zealand 251/3 in 45 overs, need 30 from 30 balls. Latham 92*, Taylor 80*

21.10 IST: Kuldeep to Latham, FOUR!

21.07 IST: Chahal to Latham, SIX! In the air... it's gone over the fielder! Flighted delivery around middle, Latham gets down and picks it up. He sweeps it and it goes aerially towards deep square leg. Manish Pandey in the deep is interested but the ball goes well over him to the fence for a maximum.

21.04 IST: There is a slight delay here. The Kiwi batsmen are having some drinks and understandably so. 49 to get from 42 balls and this is New Zealand's game to lose from hereon.

21.02 IST: Kuldeep to Taylor, takes a single and brings up the 150-run partnership in 152 balls. These two have batted so well and have almost taken their team home. Googly outside off, mistimed cut towards point for a quick single. NZ now need just 47 from 44 balls

advertisement

21.00 IST: Kuldeep to Latham, FOUR! What a hit that is! Kuldeep is a bit on the shorter side, Latham gets into the position and reverse swats it through backward point for a boundary to start the over. Superbly done!

20.55 IST: New Zealand 218/3 in 41 overs, need 63 from 54 balls. Taylor 72*, Latham 67*. Stand - 138 (142b)

20.52 IST: This match is slowly slipping out of India's hands now

20.43 IST: Bumrah to Latham, FOUR! That boundary brings up the 200 for New Zealand! Cracked away! Latham now silence the crowd with this! Short and a bit wide outside off, Tom stands tall and flays it through backward point to pick up a boundary.

20.36 IST: Bhuvi to Latham, FOUR! Sloppy from Chahal! Fuller in length on off, Tom Latham just has a push towards mid off. Chahal moves to his right but lets the ball through him for a boundary. Not impressive at all. There are some serious worried faces in the Indian dressing room now.

20.30 IST: Bhuvi to Latham, takes a couple of runs to get to his 9th ODI fifty! It's his 4th on the trot! He can play anywhere and will score runs no matter what. Well played, Tom. Good length delivery on the pads, tucked behind square on the leg side to add another couple to his tally.

20.27 IST: Bhuvi to Latham, FOUR! 100-run partnership up between the two in just 108 balls.

20.20 IST: Pandya to Latham, FOUR! Beautiful from Latham! Pandya goes fuller on the stumps, Latham shimmies down a touch and just clips it with timing to beat the dive of Rohit Sharma at mid on to end the over with a boundary. Tom moves to 48 now!

20.15 IST: Chahal to Taylor, 38th ODI fifty for Ross Taylor! It has been a valuable knock from the experienced player! But now he needs to carry on and convert this into a big one. Fuller on middle, Ross comes down the track and flicks it through mid-wicket to get a couple.

20.08 IST: Pandya to Taylor, FOUR! Fine leg was brought inside the circle and Taylor picked his spot to perfection! Slanting towards the pads, Taylor clips it through backward square leg to find the fence.

20.00 IST: Kuldeep to Latham, FOUR!

19.55 IST: Pandya to Taylor, FOUR! Bang! Good length delivery on middle, Taylor skips down the track and goes bang over mid on. The ball just bounces before crossing the rope. This should get Taylor going as he has failed to time the ball tonight.

19.50 IST: Kuldeep to Latham, 50-run stand comes up between Taylor (32*) and Latham (28*)! Loopy full toss on middle, Latham gets down and sweeps it in front of square on the leg side for a single. The job isn't done yet, these two need to take this game deep if New Zealand are to win. NZ 130/3 in 27.2 overs, need 151 more

19.41 IST: Kuldeep to Taylor, FOUR!

19.39 IST: New Zealand are 117/3 in 25 overs, need 164 runs more from 150 balls. Taylor 24*, Latham 23*

19.28 IST: Kuldeep to Latham, FOUR! 100 up for New Zealand!

19.23 IST: New Zealand are 94/3 in 20 overs, need 187 runs more from 180 balls. Taylor 16*, Latham 8*

19.21 IST: If you think India's total of 280/8 is not enough then this stat will put a smile on your faces

19.20 IST: Hardik to Latham, FOUR!

19.10 IST: Tom Latham walks in next, replacing Guptill. Last year he had great success while opening the batting in India. Now he has been handed responsibility to take care of the middle order. Let's see if he can once again do the same.

19.10 IST: Hardik to Guptill, OUT! c Karthik 32 (48 balls)

Hardik Pandya strikes! What an excellent catch that is from Karthik! Pandya persists with the short ball, Guptill swivels to pull but the ball gets bigger on him. He gets a big top edge towards deep mid-wicket. Karthik in the deep comes running to his right, keeps his eyes on the ball and then dives forward to take a really good catch. He took one earlier as well but this one is just too good a catch. Guptill departs after his scratchy knock.

18.57 IST: Kuldeep to Taylor, FOUR! Pulled away! Yadav bowls a half-tracker on middle, Taylor camps back and pulls it through square leg. Dhawan in the deep puts in a dive but fails to stop it from crossing the rope.

18.55 IST: Kuldeep to Guptill, FOUR! Picks the wrong 'un! Shorter and wider outside off, Guptill camps back and cracks it through covers for a boundary.

18.50 IST: NOT OUT! Taylor survives a loud, loud shout for LBW! The umpire isn't too keen. Virat Kohli and Dhoni have a chat regarding the review but they take a lot of time before deciding against it. Loopy ball around middle, turning in as well. Taylor misses his flick and is hit on the pads. The umpire shakes his head to the appeal that has been made. Replays show it was in line but would have missed the stumps. So, good call from the hosts to not opt for the review. NZ 66/2 in 14 overs, chasing 281 vs IND

18.46 IST: Kuldeep to Williamson, OUT! c Jadhav 6 (8 balls)

Straight to Kedar Jadhav! This time he makes no mistake! Kuldeep Yadav gets a big fish! He bowls a googly, wider outside off and asking the Kiwi skipper to go after it. Kane makes room and tries to hit it over extra cover. Doesn't bother to keep it down and ends up spooning it to Jadahv stationed there. The crowd is back alive. Don't remember when was the last time Williamson departed for a cheap score.

18.39 IST: GUPTILL SURVIVES! NOT OUT! Inside edge saves Guptill! That is why he was keen on taking the referral! Yadav tosses it up around middle, it skids a bit as Guptill comes forward to defend. Misses and is hit on the pads. A huge appeal and the umpire raises his finger. Guptill is quick to take the DRS! Replays show there is a clear inside edge and the on-field decision has to be overturned!

18.36 IST: Powerplay 2 signaled! Maximum of 4 fielders are now allowed outside the circle till the 40th over. Meanwhile, Kohli moves to his spinner, Kuldeep Yadav who comes into the attack.

18.32 IST: Bumrah to Munro, OUT! c Karthik 28 (35 balls)

In the air... taken! Colin Munro falls to a slower one and fails to make the life count. Bumrah from over the wicket, nicely changes the pace and delivers it full on middle and leg. Munro tries clipping it away but the slowness on the ball brings his downfall. He gets a leading edge which balloons high in the air towards cover. Karthik moves backwards a bit, keeps his eyes on the ball and settles nicely under it. Never easy to take those under the lights. India get a breakthrough.

18.28 IST: Bhuvi to Munro, FOUR! Carved away! Short and wide outside off, Munro sees the width and slashes at it. Gets it comfortably over cover-point to end the over with a boundary.

18.23 IST: A couple of decent overs from Bhuvneshwar and Bumrah, just 1 and 3 runs came off them respectively. NZ 42/0 in 8 ovs, chasing 281 vs IND

18.14 IST: Bumrah to Munro, FOUR!

18.13 IST: Bumrah to Munro, DROPPED AND FOUR! Kedar Jadhav has dropped a simple catch! Bumrah is not happy for the obvious reason! He bowls a length delivery on middle and leg, cramps the southpaw for room who already made room. He pulls it awkwardly towards deep square leg. Jadhav in the deep fails to judge it well as he comes in quite a few yards. He tries to take it over his head but the ball bursts through his fingers and then crosses the fence. Will Munro make the most of the life? We saw Kohli doing the same earlier.

18.12 IST: New Zealand 28/0 in 5 overs, chasing 281 vs India. Guptill 13*, Munro 13*

18.03 IST: What happened there? One of the floodlights is not working. Kohli is not happy and he has a discussion with the umpires. There is a halt in play. The batsmen have gone out of the field as well. Meanwhile, the lights are coming on slowly.

18.01 IST: Bumrah to Guptill, FOUR! Edged but flies past Dhawan! On a length and pitched around off, there is some extra bounce as Guptill flashes at it. Ekes out an edge which flies to the right of Dhawan at first slip and races away to the third man fence for a boundary.

17.54 IST: Bhuvi to Munro, SIX! Excellent shot, that! Kumar hurls it on a length and tries to bring it back. What does Munro do? He walks across and just whips it over deep square leg for a maximum. He's nailed that shot!

17.54 IST: Bumrah bowls a terrific first over from the other end, gives away just 1 run. NZ 9/0 in 2 ovs, chasing 281 vs IND

17.46 IST: Guptill to Bhuvi, FOUR! Back-to-back boundaries! Not in perfect control of this one but still effective. Fullish ball on middle, Guptill drives it uppishly down the ground and past mid on to find the fence. NZ 8/0 in 1 over, chasing 281 vs IND

17.46 IST: Guptill to Bhuvi, FOUR! The Kiwis are away! Fractionally overpitched on middle, Guptill leans ahead and drives it beautifully down the ground for a majestic boundary.

17.45 IST: New Zealand openers Martin Guptill and Colin Munro are at the crease. Virat Kohli hasn't taken the field as he was struggling with cramps, Rohit Sharma will lead the side in the meantime. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has the new ball in his hands.

INDIA INNINGS:

17:15 IST: INDIA FINISH ON 280/8!

India have done well to reach a good score on this two-paced surface. They didn't get the best of starts as they lost both the openers not for much. It was Virat Kohli who stood stall and played street smart cricket. He stitched useful stands along with Kedar Jadhav and MS Dhoni to lay a good foundation. The Indian skipper changed gears and scored a brilliant century before departing in the last over.

Mitchell Santner was effective and extracted some spin from the surface. The pick of the bowlers was Trent Boult, who registered his third career best figure. He was lethal with the new ball as well with the old ones in the slog overs, finishing with figures of 10-1-35-4. The visitors will still feel that it is 20-30 odd more on this venue where the ball is stopping at times and India have two top quality wrist spinners in the rank

17.13 IST: Southee to Bhuvi, OUT! Bouncer climbing on Kumar. It gets big on him as he goes for the pull. Henry Nicolls at deep mid-wicket moves to his left and grabs a well-judged catch. INDIA FINISH ON 280/8.

17:13 IST: 49.5: Tim Southee to B Kumar, SIX! Right out of the screws! Shortish delivery on middle and leg, Kumar pulls it with aplomb over deep mid-wicket for a maximum.

17:12 IST: 49.4: Tim Southee to B Kumar, FOUR! No matter how they come, India will be happy that they are coming. Short delivery, Kumar goes for a pull but top edges it over backward square leg for a boundary.

17.10 IST: WICKET! Good length delivery in line of the stumps, Virat backs away and whips it towards Boult at long on. Hasn't got the elevation on it and Trent pouches it safely. A gem of a knock from the Indian skipper comes to an end. The entire dressing room is up on its feet.

16:58 IST: 46.3: A Milne to V Kohli, FOUR! Whipped! Full length delivery on middle, Kohli wrists it over cow corner for a one bounce boundary.

16.54 IST: WICKET! Take a bow, Kane Williamson! Length delivery on off, Pandya goes for an agricultural slog over long on but skews it off the outer half of the bat. Kane Williamson from extra cover sprints after it. Deep extra cover and long off are interested but the skipper calls for it. India 238/6 (45.3 overs) vs New Zealand

16.48 IST: CENTURY! That's it. Virat Kohli slams his 31st hundred. This man keeps on breaking records at will, going past Ricky Ponting to get his 31st ODI century. Short delivery on leg, Kohli pulls it all along the ground to deep square leg for a run. The Indian skipper raises his bat skywards to sink in all the applause. Got to credit him to bat this way in humid conditions. His fifth ton this year. Also, a century has been scored at the Wankhede after Tendulkar hit one in 1996.

16:44 IST: SIX! Brilliant shot! He has a liking for left-arm spin and executes this shot really well. In the arc for Pandya, he opens up and smokes it over long on for a huge maximum.

16.34 IST: WICKET! Dhoni falls for 25. Third wicket for Boult, he has having a great day at the office. Shortish delivery angling away from Dhoni, a bit of extra bounce on that. MS rises with the bounce and goes for a cut but isn't able to control it well. Guptill who is stationed at point crouches to his right and takes a good low catch. The 57-run stand comes to an end. India 201/5 (41 overs) vs New Zealand

16:23 IST: PARTNERSHIP! Another short delivery, pulled all along the ground to deep square leg for a run. That brings up the 50-run stand between the duo. It has been a sensible partnership, milking the singles and putting the bad balls away.

16:19 IST: FOUR! Strong wrists! Slower off cutter on middle, Kohli waits for it and whips it over mid-wicket for a rocketing boundary. India 190/4 (37.4 overs) vs New Zealand

16:11 IST: 35.2: C Munro to V Kohli, Wide! Down the leg side, Kohli goes for the whip but misses. Latham does well to stop it.

16:11 IST: Short and room on offer, Kohli punches it to sweeper cover and straightaway calls for a couple. Dhoni responds and makes the danger end with ease. These two are really quick between the wickets.

15:56 IST: Drinks break. Good passage of play for India. Kohli is playing street smart cricket on this two-paced track.

15:40 IST: MS Dhoni strides out to bat. Chants of Dhoni Dhoni at the Wankhede. Who can forget his winning six that gave India the 2011 World Cup.

15.39 IST: WICKET! The frontline bowler does the trick for New Zealand. Perhaps, Kane Williamson should have brought him back to bowl earlier. Bowls a sharp bouncer on leg stump, Karthik goes for the pull but is hurried on by it. Ends up getting a top edge towards long leg. Munro runs to his left and takes a well-judged catch. India 144/4 (28.4 overs) vs New Zealand

15.26 IST: Munro to Karthik, FOUR! Poor delivery and duly punished! Short delivery down the leg side, Karthik pulls it with aplomb through backward square leg for a boundary.

15.21 IST: Milne to Kohli, FOUR! FIFTY No. 46 for VIRAT KOHLI! Well played, Indian skipper. Fuller length ball on off, Kohli is on the move and drives it down the ground for a majestic boundary. He lifts his bat towards the dressing room. It has been a sensible knock for him. He will be eyeing a big one.

15.20 IST: Milne to Kohli, SIX! Shot! Used the pace of the bowler to good effect. Short delivery down the leg side, Kohli pulls it towards fine leg. Munro is interested but the ball sails over the head. That brings up the 50-run stand between the two as well. The replays show that the ball took an outstanding one-handed catch. Kudos to the youngster, the crowd applauds for him.

15:03 IST: Problems for New Zealand. De Grandhomme has started to vomit and the physio rushes in to attend him. He was not his hundred percent from the word go and the heat has got to him. Hopefully, he will be alright.

14:57 IST: DROPPED! Fuller length delivery outside off, stops a bit on the pitch. Kohli is drawn into the drive early and hence, mistimes it to Santner at short extra cover. He moves to his left but the ball bursts through his hands. He expected it to come slower and that was the reason he was caught off guard. It was a dolly and should have been taken. You can't afford to drop one of the best batsman in the world. How costly will it prove? India 86/3 (18.4 overs) vs New Zealand

14:50 IST: 17.3: M Santner to D Karthik, FOUR! A bit of room and Karthik pouches on it. Short delivery, Karthik rocks back and cuts it past the point fielder to find the fence.

14:40 IST: Time for Drinks. Meanwhile, Dinesh Karthik comes out to bat. He would look to play an innings of substance on his return to the side.

14.40 IST: WICKET! Intelligent bowling from Santner brings in the reward. He bowls this one slower through the air in line of the stumps, it stops a bit on the batsman as well. Jadhav is early into the drive and hence, ends up chipping it to the left side of Santner who moves to his left and gobbles it up with ease. India 71/3 (15.2 overs) vs New Zealand

14:36 IST: FOUR! Streaky runs! Fuller in length well outside off, Kohli plays away from the body but gets it off the outer half through the vacant gully region and the ball races to the fence. It seemed at the beginning that Guptill at point was in business but is was far away from him.

14:24 IST: Boult is going off the field after his first spell. Meanwhile, Mitchell Santner comes on for a bowl.

14:23 IST: Four Leg byes! Shortish delivery angling in from outside off, Jadhav shoulders his arms but the ball hits his stomach and deflects towards third man. Boult rushes to his left, slides but fails to stop it. Great effort though.

14:20 IST: FOUR! Sublime! Textbook stuff from the Indian skipper. Half-volley outside off, Kohli leans into it and plays a majestic cover drive to pick up a boundary.

13:58 IST: WICKET! 5.4: T Boult to R Sharma, OUT b Trent Boult. India have lost their second wicket. It is always a dream for a pace bowler to witness such a sight. Bowls a full length delivery at 141 clicks around off, Rohit goes for a wild slog over mid on but misses it completely to get his off stump rattled. It was a poor shot from the Indian vice-captain and he pays the price for it. Fails to make his start count and his weakness against left-arm seam gets exposed again. Second wicket for Trent Boult, he is on a roll. India 29/2 (5.4 overs) vs New Zealand

BCCI Photo

13:53 IST: 4.5: Tim Southee to R Sharma, SIX! Rohit is toying with Adam Milne. Another bouncer on leg stump, Sharma pulls it more convincingly. Adam again leaps but to no avail. Back-to-back maximums for Rohit.

13:53 IST: 4.4: Tim Southee to R Sharma, SIX! Just over the man at fine leg! Short delivery on middle and leg, Sharma comes on the front foot initially but the ball gets big on him. He still goes through with his pull shot but gets a top edge. Milne leaps full stretch near the ropes but the ball sails over him.

13.47 IST: WICKET! Shikhar Dhawan departs. The left-arm seam of Boult has reaped dividends! He steams and bowls a back of a length delivery close to the off stump. Generates some extra bounce from the deck and Dhawan goes fishing after it, aiming to get it towards third man. However, ends up getting an outside edge towards Latham behind the wickets who moves to his left and takes a regulation catch. India 16/1 (3.2 overs) vs New Zealand

13:33 IST: 0.3: Tim Southee to S Dhawan, FOUR! Cracker of a shot! Half-volley around off, Dhawan drives it elegantly through extra cover to find the fence. First of the innings.

13.29 IST: Huge crowd is in place for this exciting contest. Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma to open the batting for India. Tim Southee to steam in with the first new ball. Two slips in place.

13.25 IST: The players are getting ready for their respective National Anthems.

13.05 IST: TEAMS!

India: Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Dinesh Karthik, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal

New Zealand: Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor, Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Colin de Grandhomme, Mitchell Santner, Adam Milne, Tim Southee, Trent Boult

13.01 IST: TOSS! India have won the toss and they will bat first against New Zealand.

12.36 IST: Getting prepared for a big-big match for the Kiwis.

12.34 IST: The pitch looks ready for a good match.

It will be a special occasion for the Indian skipper Virat Kohli as he prepares to take the field for the 200th time in one day internationals.

With 8,767 runs at an average of 55.13, and 30 centuries and 45 half-centuries, Kohli remains the key ODI player for India.

India take on New Zealand in Sunday's opener of the three-match ODI series, with the Black Caps getting some encouragement from their limited-overs performance last year.

India swept the Tests 3-0 in 2016 but only edged New Zealand 3-2 in the five-match ODI series.

There was surprise at Australia's 4-1 capitulation prior to this series but India's previous opponents relied more on pace than spin, despite slower wickets here.

Ashton Agar and Adam Zampa never started any of the five ODIs together, and New Zealand is not expected to make the same mistake with both Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi set to play in Mumbai. Martin Guptill and spin all-rounder George Worker will provide backup.

It makes for an intriguing spin vs spin battle, as Virat Kohli will look to deploy his two leg spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav in tandem. Eventually, this short series could boil down to which team faces the spin challenge better.

Squads:

India: Virat Kohli (captain), Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, MS Dhoni (wk), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shardul Thakur.

New Zealand: Kane Williamson (captain), Trent Boult, Colin de Grandhomme, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Adam Milne, Colin Munro, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, George Worker and Ish Sodhi.
