Alaska to receive $24.7 million in emergency relief for road and bridge repairs

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) announced $871.2 million will go towards emergency relief for road and bridge repairs in 39 states including Alaska. -- $24.7 million of which is coming to Alaska. A little less than half of that will go toward earthquake-related repairs.

USDOT is working with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to provide relief funding to the areas that need it, going towards repairs for roads and bridges damaged by storms, floods, and other unexpected events.

This emergency relief program reimburses states, territories, federal land management agencies and tribal governments for eligible expenses associated with damage from natural disasters or other emergency situations. The funds can go towards re-constructing or replacing damaged roadways along with setting up detours, replacing guardrails or damaged safety devices.

Here's the breakdown for the $24,749,400 Alaska is set to receive:

September 2012 Southcentral Flooding - $1,500,000

Spring 2015 Dalton Highway Flooding - $11,200,000

October 2018 Kenai Peninsula Borough and City of Seward Flood - $1,501,200

November 30, 2018 Anchorage, Southcentral, and Mat-SU Earthquake - $10,548,200

Other areas receiving relief funds include Puerto Rico, with more than $220 going towards continued repairs following Hurricanes Irma and Maria. California is also set to receive more than $157 million, including more than $115 million for 2017 winter storms.
