Moped Thefts On The Rise In Austin: Police

Astonishingly maneuverable with high mileage rates and easy maintenance, two-wheelers are increasingly appealing to thieves as well.

AUSTIN, TEXAS — With their easy maintenance, maneuverability and high gas mileage, mopeds represent a handy way to get around — particularly in a college town. But those same attributes may be fueling an increase in thefts, prompting police to urge owners in safeguarding their vehicles.

Police report that moped thefts are on the rise. They didn't provide statistics, but asserted their thefts have increased. As a result, campus police urge people to take simply precautions to avoid being victimized by theft.

Lock your scooter to something immovable. Anchoring it to a fixed object like a bike rack or light post will prevent thieves from being able to roll it away or put it in a truck.

Keep it out of sight. If you don't havea garage, keep a cover on it. It'll be harder to access and harder for a thief to figure out if they can easily steal it.

Lock it twice. Use two different types of locks to secure your moped. Most thieves won't be prepared to tackle different kinds of locks at once.
