DARKE COUNTY – A record-setting softball player and one of the state’s best track and field athletes are this week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week.

This week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week are Franklin Monroe softball player Emilee Morris and Greenville boys track and field athlete Ryan Trick.

Morris has broken every pitching record at Franklin Monroe including wins in a season, wins in a career, strikeouts in a season, strikeouts in a career and ERA. She broke her own strikeouts in a season record on Thursday, reaching 120 for the year.

“She’s pitching well,” Franklin Monroe softball coach Mike Morris said. “All her strikeouts are definitely helping us out because we’re a young team.”

This season Morris has a 2.01 ERA, and she’s only walked seven batters the entire season.

“She throws strikes,” Coach Morris said. “She doesn’t walk batters. She only has seven walks and most of them are intentional. When you have that kind of control she’s tough to beat.”

Along with being Franklin Monroe’s ace pitcher, Morris is a key offensive weapon for the Jets as well. She’s hitting .407 and has seven RBI.

“She’s been playing very well this year,” Coach Morris said. “Offensively she’s batting third in our lineup, third highest batting average. Defensively she’s sound.”

Trick is one of the best pole vaulters in all of Ohio. He’s cleared 15 feet 1 inch already this season, which is the best mark among Division I athletes this year.

“I am very pleased with how he has been doing,” Greenville pole vault coach Micah Coblentz said. “He’s been working with his vault, just trying to improve on the little things.”

Trick got an early start to the season all the way back in October or November, Coblentz said, as he worked to reach the indoor nationals. He accomplished that feat by clearing 14 feet 6 inches and competed at the nationals in New York.

“He just kind of blossomed,” Coblentz said.

Trick has only gotten better during the outdoor season, overcoming a nagging injury that has plagued him in the past to become one of the state’s best vaulters.

“His work ethic is just great,” Coblentz said. “He is a hard worker. Doesn’t like to stop until he thinks he has improved on something.”

Along with being a great athlete, Trick also is a great person.

“He is a lot of fun. He keeps everything very lighthearted and keeps everybody smiling and laughing,” Coblentz said. “I’m just tickled that everything is working out for him this year.”
