A pair of tennis superstars brought back a haul of medals from the Special Olympics GB National Games in Sheffield last week.

Frances Smiley,18, and Jack Dickson, 19, each got gold in their respective single categories.

Then they really hit the heights when as a pair they won the mixed doubles.

Jack, of Troon, studied at Marr College and he suffers from a number of intellectual disabilities.

But he has found his passion in tennis.

Much like Frances, of Prestwick, who studied at Queen Margaret Academy.

Frances has Dyspraxia which is a condition affecting physical co-ordination that causes a child to perform less well than expected in daily activities for his or her age, and appear to move clumsily.

She also suffers with attention deficit which meant she struggled all through school as it had a really negative effect on her social life.

But she found her calling when she started playing tennis whilst at school.

She now trains at Prestwick Tennis Club on Whinfield Road with Jack, and they were both part of the 270 squad representing Scotland in the games which took places from Monday, August 7 until Friday, August 12.

Around 2,600 athletes with intellectual disabilities of all ages and abilities came together from across the country.

They were supported over four days of competition by 800 coaches, 1000 volunteers, 200 officials and over 7,000 family and friends.

And Frances’ mum was chuffed with her daughter.

Christina Smiley, also of Prestwick, said: “I am over the moon for Frances - I still can’t quite process it.

“I always knew she would do well, but the fact she has won this national event just shows how far she has come.

“I remember in school she would struggle to even leave the house but now it is hard to keep her in.

“Sport really is a life-changing thing for sufferers of intellectual disabilities as it is an opportunity to show people that they are capabale of a lot.”

After this huge success, Christina and the rest of her friends and family are hoping that Frances and Jack will be selected for upcoming competitions.

The eventual aim will be the Special Olympics World Summer Games that will be held in Abu Dhabi in March 2019.

But the next step for Frances is doing a course at Ayr College which will help her general skills - and the hope is that she can move onto a cookery course in time.
