In years to come, there might be a saying “the best thing since speedboat-delivered gelato". That’s because Deliveroo has partnered with gelato brand Messina to offer the nation's first speedboat delivery service, which will drop off free gelato to beachgoers in and around Sydney Harbour this weekend.

The Deliveroo speedboat will be zooming around nine Sydney beaches and wharves, including Double Bay, Rose Bay, Nielsen Park, Milk Beach and Watson Bay in the eastern suburbs on Saturday December 15, before hitting the north side on Sunday December 16 at Manly Wharf, Clontarf Beach, Spit Marina and Balmoral Beach.

We haven’t been given too many details about the gimmick, but we’re told the speedboat will be docked at the first beach from 11.30am, before travelling to the next location on its gelato-tour itinerary. The boat will spend 30 to 40 minutes at each spot, during which time you'll be able to snap up one of two new handheld Messina treats: a strawberry pavlova choc top, and a peach-bellini "Weissina" bar. Everything will be free (though there's a limit of one item per person).

Depending on the beach, you'll be able to access the boat via a wharf, or you'll have to wade out to it (a likely scenario at Milk Beach, for example).

“We are always looking for ways to make our deliveries more fun for riders and customers. With some of the best beaches in Sydney, we’re confident Sydneysiders will enjoy the thrill of a speedy gelato delivery this weekend [while] they soak up the sun,” said Deliveroo country manager Levi Aron in a statement.

The Deliveroo speedboat is an Australian first, following previous on-water operations by the meal-delivery company, including Deliveroo speedboats in Hong Kong, and jetski deliveries in the United Kingdom.

The Deliveroo Messina speedboat will run Saturday December 15 and Sunday December 16 from 11.30am.
