Spawn Reboot Confirmed by Creator Todd McFarlane: Hear About His Dark New Vision

In 1997, New Line Cinema released the superhero film “Spawn,” based on the comic book character created by Todd McFarlane, about murdered special forces agent Al Simmons (played by Michael Jai White) who is resurrected as Spawn, the demonic leader of Hell’s army. Though the film was a modest box office success, it received mostly negative reviews from critics. Now, McFarlane confirms that a new “Spawn” film is currently in the works, and it’s not gonna be a soft-pedaled version of the story either.

In an interview with Tiffany Smith on AMC’s “Geeking Out,” Kevin Smith and Greg Gunberg’s late-night pop culture talk show, McFarlane said that there will be a second film and that it’s “not gonna be a continuation, not gonna be a sequel…scrub the first movie, it was 20 years ago. It’s gonna be dark, R-rated, scary, bad-ass sort of script that’s tight and it’s not a nice, polite PG-13 [thing] with ray-guns.”

“The world is gonna be real, except for one thing that’s gonna move,” McFarlane continued. “So, when I watch ‘The Exorcist,’ that movie was real except for the one girl whose head sorta twirled. You’re never gonna see a dude in a rubber suit…this is gonna be my shark, my ‘Jaws’ shark…If you’ve got evil in your heart, you better watch out, because he will mess you up.”

Earlier this year, McFarlane said that he a completed script that he was currently editing. “I’ve finished the script, and I’m in the process of editing. It’s 183 pages, and [producers] usually like 120. I still think it’s going to end up being about 140, because I’m putting in details for myself.”
