Thousands of households across Anglesey will receive new trolley boxes to help the island meet ambitious recycling targets.

A further 10,000 containers are being rolled out this month aimed at further cutting down the tonnage sent to landfill.

Some 7,000 of the trolley boxes were first distributed last October 2016 following the introduction of controversial three week refuse collections.

In February, the trial was extended to another 2,000 homes on Holy Island, thanks to grant funding from the Welsh Government .

Residents on the island currently recycle 59.5% of their waste - but must reach 64% by 2019 for the county council to meet Welsh Government targets and avoid being fined.

The trolleys themselves are a stack of three separate containers for different types of material on a wheeled trolley,

Anglesey ’s head of waste, Dewi Williams, said: “We’re pleased to announce that the first phase of the trolley box roll-out will begin later this month, with another 10,000 trolley boxes distributed later this summer.

“Our initial trolley box trial, launched in October 2016 as part of a new recycling service, proved its worth in a very short space of time. Trolley boxes are helping and encouraging Anglesey residents to recycle more than they did previously.”

He added: “We’ve already seen a significant increase in recycling levels in trial areas as well as a drop in residual, or black bin, waste. We now expect these improvements to be replicated across the island once everyone has had a new trolley box.”

According to the council, homes which usually receive collections on a Monday or Tuesday will be the first to receive the new stacking trolley boxes - including Holy Island, Valley, Llanfachraeth, Llanfaethlu, Cemaes, Amlwch, Rhosybol, and Llanerchymedd.

In March, the Welsh Government’s cabinet secretary for environment and rural affairs, Lesley Griffiths, announced a £350,000 grant to help the Island’s recycling efforts.

Match funding from the county council has ensured that another 10,000 recycling trolley boxes will be distributed by July.
