Marcel Keizer named new Ajax manager on two-year deal

Ajax have appointed Marcel Keizer as their new head coach on a two-year deal with the option of a third season.

Keizer was in charge of Jong Ajax last season and replaces Peter Bosz, who departed to take charge of Borussia Dortmund.

"We had some very positive talks and I feel the club believes in me," Keizer told the club's official website. "I was ready to start the new season with Jong Ajax again, but you never know what happens in football. This is a great opportunity for me.

"I cannot wait to get started, we will have to be ready quite early due to the Champions League qualifiers.

"Our goal is to build on the way we played in 2016-17 and make it a great season where we can challenge for silverware."

Keizer takes charge of Ajax after they finished second in the Eredivisie and reached the Europa League final, where they were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United.

The 48-year-old will officially begin his new job on July 1, having led Jong Ajax to second place in Holland's second tier last season.

"From the moment we started looking for another coach, Keizer was the most suitable candidate,'' Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar said.

"It's appropriate for Ajax to look internally for a replacement, in the past many coaches have been appointed from within their own club.

"He knows the players, the set-up and is behind the philosophy of the club. In addition, he has shown great promise last season with some excellent play."

Meanwhile, Ajax also confirmed former Everton and Netherlands defender John Heitinga has replaced Aron Winter as the club's under-19 coach.
