The Queen has shared a message of support, ahead of the virtual RHS Chelsea Flower Show, praising the UK's passion for horticulture.

Every year, Her Majesty carries out her annual visit to the Chelsea Flower Show, alongside other members of the royal family. Unable to attend the cancelled, world-famous event this year, the Queen is still expressing her love for the flower show, as the new event format begins online from Tuesday 19th to Saturday 23rd May.

Over on the Royal Family's Twitter page, a post shared her personal wishes to the public. It read: "Today, The Queen has sent her best wishes to all those associated with #RHSChelsea: On the occasion of the Opening of the Virtual Chelsea Flower Show 2020, I send my best wishes to all those associated with the Royal Horticultural Society.

"My family and I have always enjoyed visiting the Show, and I know that your Members and Supporters will be disappointed that they are unable to attend in person this year. As Patron of the Royal Horticultural Society, I was pleased to hear that you will be providing gardening advice and virtual sessions on your website, from Monday 18th to Saturday 23rd May."

Her message also explained that her grandmother, Queen Mary, would have been thrilled to see the love people have of their gardens. "I am sure that my grandmother, Queen Mary, who first attended the Chelsea Flower Show in 1916, would be delighted that many people today have an enthusiasm for horticulture, and that gardening remains a popular past time in the United Kingdom.

"As you adapt to the present circumstances, I hope you find this unique event enjoyable and interesting."

The Queen has been a patron of the RHS since 1952 and visits Chelsea and its gardens, nurseries and educational exhibits every year on the press and VIP day.

The virtual Chelsea Flower Show will run online from Tuesday 19th to Saturday 23rd May. See more information here.
