AN ambitious project aiming to bring together different generations to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War is the focus of a Galashiels group’s campaign for localities fund votes.

Energise Galashiels Trust - a voluntary group whose aim is to create a more vibrant, welcoming and confident community - has planned a series of events and activities running from the start of October through to to Remembrance Day on Sunday, November 11.

The Trust, inspired by the positive response to the Cascade of Falling Poppies light installation last year, believes there is a desire in the local community, and beyond, to mark the centenary with a bigger than normal programme of remembrance.

Of the men from the town who went off to fight on the battlefields of northern Europe, 638 did not return - 6.4 per cent of the town’s male population and a 40 per cent higher loss than the national average.

Bill White, vice chairman of Energise Galashiels Trust, told the Border Telegraph: “This would be a lasting legacy for the town to remember the Braw Lads of Galashiels who never returned to their hometown but made the ultimate sacrifice in order that we can live the lives we have today.”

For those fortunate enough to come home, the impact of the conflict remained with them, as did the desire to ensure the story of their sacrifice lived on.

The Trust’s programme aims to bring the Galashiels war story to life through the likes of dramatic art installations and performances, diverse range of exhibitions, and a dedicated WW1 season at the Pavilion Cinema.

It is hoped all generations will come together in remembrance through the events and activities.

Several community groups have already expressed an interest in working with Energise Galashiels Trust, ensuring the programme is varied and appealing to locals and visitors to the town.

Mr White continued: “Even voting for this project is a private act of remembrance in itself and we appeal to everyone within our local community to support our project”.

Energise Galashiels Trust is also seeking funding to purchase a PA system that would be freely available for community use.
