Razer appears to have filed for a patent for a gaming handheld device.

Based on the drawings the device is designed similar to a Nintendo Switch. The patent also describes details of the handheld that sound like it operates in a similar way.

Specifically with the controllers.

The Razer handheld seems to have Joy Con-like controllers

The handheld is complete with joysticks on either side, a dpad, and additional control buttons.

The design of the controllers also appear to mimic that of the Joy Con, the controllers used for Nintendo’s Switch console.

There are some notable differences. With the Joy Con, the joysticks and 4-button array are flipped on the right-side controller.

Another difference is the way they attach. Based on the patent, these couple to the device mechanically. Though, instead of sliding into place like with the Switch they attach with a magnetic system.

The controllers use separate batteries and connect via Bluetooth

Each controller comes with its own separate battery. This means they charge separately as well. When it comes to connection, the patent states that they utilize the HID transport protocol.

This allows each controller to connect to the handheld separately while still providing synced up controls for games. Inputs can be recognized at the same time, so games should have no problem with controls in this respect.

The handheld looks to offer a full set of controls like what you would get with a standard controller. In addition to the two joysticks, the dpad, the and 4-button array, it looks like there are two bumper and trigger buttons on the top.

There also appears to be a button on the left and right that may serve as start and select buttons. Though, it is mentioned that the button on the left controller may actually be an LED indicator.

This particular patent application was filed in March of this year and published on August 1. That being said it’s also related to previous patent applications that Razer has filed over the years. This may suggest that Razer has been working on or considering this device and design for a while now.

While Razer is known for its long-running line of gaming accessories and now famous gaming laptops, it’s also dabbled in handheld gaming devices before. Prior to now it launched a tablet called the Razer Edge which had a case with two attached controller handles on either side.

This design is certainly different, and would probably be a vast improvement, but it definitely wouldn’t be Razer’s first foray into mobile gaming setups.
