Scabies-free drive at Central Jail successful

Therefore, apart from providing proper medication, the jail authorities also decided to enhance the green cover at the jail, besides beautify the landscape. Jail Superintendent Ashish Kapoor said a large number of patients were suffering from scabies a few months ago when he took over. For the treatment of scabies, medicines worth Rs 1.50 lakh were donated by Rotary Club, Civil Lines. We also educated them about the precautions needed to be taken and symptoms of skin infections and how to administer medicines,” Kapoor said.

Jail Superintendent Ashish Kapoor said a large number of patients were suffering from scabies a few months ago when he took over. Therefore he decided to provide treatment to inmates and consulted with medical officers. Kapoor, while talking to this correspondent, said, “Due to limited resources, we took the help of Rotary Club and other NGOs which provided medicines to inmates free of cost. Now, majority of the patients have recovered fully.” He said, to curb the growing skin ailments among jail inmates, including women, they were informed about how to maintain health and hygiene. “Skin infections, like scabies, were common among inmates. It spreads easily due to sharing of personal items. We asked them to wash cloths in hot water, use personal soaps and other items besides regularly keeping their bedding into sunshine to make it free of infection. We also educated them about the precautions needed to be taken and symptoms of skin infections and how to administer medicines,” Kapoor said. The problem of overcrowding was also taken into account on the newly-constructed jail premises, he added. For the treatment of scabies, medicines worth Rs 1.50 lakh were donated by Rotary Club, Civil Lines. Follow-up health camps were also held. The unhygienic environment leading to various ailments has become a headache for the jail authorities. Therefore, apart from providing proper medication, the jail authorities also decided to enhance the green cover at the jail, besides beautify the landscape. For this, they took the help of some religious organisations, which donated saplings and also did plantation. .
