2 officers hurt, 2 guns recovered, 1 suspect in both crimes, police say

Tyquan Karim Hassel

WYOMING, MI - A month after a police officer landed on a "bed of nails" booby trap, another suffered a broken hand during scuffle with a suspect.

Tyquan Karim Hassel played a role, directly or indirectly, in both cases, police say.

Last month, the 19-year-old Kentwood man allegedly burglarized a medical-marijuana facility in the 5300-block of Clay Avenue SW. He allegedly dropped a handgun and ran as police responded to a 1:32 a.m. alarm on Feb. 12.

After detaining Hassel and another burglary suspect, Demirius Andres Sims, 19, police began a secondary search of the area.

Officer Dustin Cook climbed a fence and landed on a "bed of nails," a 4-by-8-foot board with 3-inch deck screws. He suffered serious injuries.

The gun recovered Feb. 12.

Earlier this week, police responded to a report of drug activity at 28th Street SW and Taft Avenue.

Police say Hassel refused to comply with police who then tried to arrest him. He fought with several officers until he was taken into custody, police said.

Police said he had a handgun in his front waistband.

The injured officer was treated at a local hospital and will undergo surgery on a broken hand, police said.

After his first arrest, Hassel was released after posting 10 percent of a $20,000 bond for carrying a concealed weapon and breaking and entering.

The gun recovered March 12.

He was arraigned Wednesday, March 15, on the most recent charges of carrying a concealed weapon and assaulting and resisting a police officer.

He was jailed on $100,000 bond.
