A rogue politician owes £1,149 council tax debt.

The identity of the serving local politician is a mystery but they are not allowed to attend meetings making key decisions about the council tax itself.

Now the hunt is on to find the man - or less likely the woman - who has failed to pay the civic tariff.

There are 22 men and six ladies who serve on South Ayrshire Council.

And they all pocket between £16,893 and nearly £34,000 a year.

One senior councillor said: “If the councillor involved failed to declare this it would be a serious breach.

“We are trying to sniff out the guilty party.”

South Ayrshire Council have confirmed the councillor is in arrears but refuse to reveal the identity.

More than 30 councillors in Scotland have historic council debts, a freedom of information request showed.

Tim Baulk, South Ayrshire Council’s head of finance said: “We’re pleased that most people pay their council tax on time, and last year (2016-17), we received more than 95 per cent of all council tax owed to us within the year.

“Where any council tax payer fails to keep their payments up to date, we work to recover any and all monies owed. We can also provide advice and support as appropriate if anyone is facing financial difficulties.”
