Brogan Austin’s time at the USA Track and Field 10 Mile championships last weekend puts him among the best all-time among Iowa residents. The former Boone High prep broke 48 minutes for 10 miles, becoming one of the few Iowans to achieve the feat. Austin finished in 47:57 to place 13th overall.

“Finally feeling like myself again!” Austin said in a Runablaze Iowa press release. “I was due for a big day but I ended up cramping around mile 7 and had to slow down to manage it. Still a big PR for me. I also PR’d in the 10k going through in 29:18. Perfect weather and good competition lead to some great times.”

Austin, 27, ran an even 50 minutes at the 10-mile Capital Pursuit in September of 2016.

Austin’s time beats the effort produced by Dam to Dam 20k record-holder Phil Coppess and former Iowa State great Richard Kaitany, as reported by Runablaze historian Cal Murdock. Coppess ran 48:00 at the 10-mile Capital Pursuit in his historic 1985. That effort came just three months after running 59:23 at Dam to Dam and just a few weeks before winning the Twin Cities Marathon in 2:10:05.

The Kenyan-born Kaitany, who holds the fastest marathon in Iowa history (2:09:39 at the 1988 Chicago Marathon), owned a best of 48:03 for 10 miles.

Now, to the WEEKEND UPDATE. The 15th-ranked Iowa State women’s cross country team took their show on the road Friday to Peoria, Ill. The Cyclones captured the team title and sophomore Cailie Logue was the overall champion at the Bradley Pink Classic on Friday. The Cyclones put five runners in the top 25 of the Red race, paced by Logue’s 20:32.6 time for 6 kilometers. The victory was Logue’s second as a collegian, coming on the heels of a Hawkeye Invitational win in 2017.

Senior Anne Frisbie finished fourth in 20:44.7, followed close behind by sophomore Amanda Vestri in eighth in 20:49.9. In 19th place was senior Kelly Naumann in 21:18.9, followed by sophomore Karly Ackley in 22nd place in 21:22.6 and senior Abby Caldwell in 24th in 21:23.1. Caldwell is a former Waverly-Shell Rock prep.

Redshirt sophomore Gwynne Wright, a former Pekin prep, was 31st in 21:29.6 and fellow redshirt sophomore Larkin Chapman 34th in 21:31.3 to help the Cyclones score 51 points and easily outdistance South Dakota by 89 points. Chapman is a former Muscatine High prep.

Iowa finished sixth in the team standings and was paced for the first time this season by former Des Moines Roosevelt prep and Iowa State transfer Megan Schott. The sophomore was 12th overall in 21:02.2. Senior Andrea Shine finished 14th for the Hawkeyes in 21:08.6. Freshman Anna Hostetler, a former Mid-Prairie standout, was 27th in 21:25.8. Another freshman, Grace McCabe, was 63rd in 21:54.0.

Leading Northern Iowa in the Red race was freshman Gabby Champion in 69th place in 21:56.5. Former Charles City prep McKayla Cole, a freshman, was 77th in 21:59.1. Former Iowa City West prep Gabby Skopec took 102nd in 22:13.4. The Panthers were 19th as a team.

In the men’s competition, former Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson prep Eldon Warner finished 16th in the 8k race in 24:52.9. Warner is a South Dakota senior. Iowa and Iowa State didn’t compete in Peoria, but Drake and Northern Iowa did.

Drake took 12th out of 33 teams, as junior Kyle Brandt led the way in 25th place in 25:06.0. Senior Josh Yeager, a former Center Point-Urbana prep, was 46th in 25:24.1 and Kevin Kelley was 60th in 25:36.9.

The Panthers finished 14th as a team and were paced by freshman Wal Khat in 24:58.1 in 20th. Redshirt junior Ben Ahlrichs, who hails from Anamosa, was 83rd in 25:50.5. Junior Alex Jackson, a former Fort Dodge prep, was 110th in 26:07.0.

Madison, Wis., was the site of the Pre Nationals on Saturday and the Iowa men competed against a stacked national field wanting a look at next month’s NCAA nationals course. The Hawkeyes were paced in the Cardinal race by junior Nathan Mylenek in 57th place. His time of 24:39.7 for 8k is a season best. Former Valley prep Daniel Soto, a senior, was 81st in 24:52.9. Junior Karson Sommer, who went to Pleasant Valley High, was 110th in 25:08.2. Senior Bailey Hesse-Withbroe was 127th in a season-best 25:19.0, followed by junior and former Bettendorf prep Brandon Cooley in 141st place in 25:25.9. Freshman Noah Healy was 156th in 25:39.5.

In the women’s competition, former Urbandale High prep Elyse Prescott was seventh on the University of Minnesota team in 22:11 for the 6k Cardinal race. Prescott helped the Gophers finish seventh in the team race.

Also, former Waukee prep Rachel Brush finished 151st in the 6k race in 22:18.6. She is a University of Nebraska junior.

State College, Pa., was the site of the Penn State Nationals on Saturday and former Linn-Mar of Marion prep Ryan Murphy finished 23rd for the University of Arkansas. Murphy ran 25:29 for 5.2 miles to help the Razorbacks finish third in the team race.

In the women’s competition, former Johnston High prep Jordyn Kleve finished 134th for the University of Missouri. Kleve ran the 6k race in 22:18.

Now we turn to the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, where professional Matt Hanson of Storm Lake was aiming for a top-10 finish. Hanson finished the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run in 8:39:58 to finish 33rd place among the men. Hanson, whose specialty is the run, put in a 3:10:34 marathon.

“Well Kona, you win this round,” Hanson wrote on Instagram. “Definitely not the day I wanted, but that’s racing. Back to the drawing board to figure out how to crack the Kona code.”

Hanson was one of four Iowans who finished. Barry Breffle of Cedar Rapids completed another Ironman Kona, finishing in 79th place among men 45-49 in 9:54:08. Breffle’s total time was 9:54:08 after a 3:51:42 marathon.

Also getting to the finish line was Drake Austin of Marion. Austin completed the course in 11:57:43 and was 1,680th overall, 98th among males 25-29.

And deep into the Iowa night, Mark Bissing of Clive also became a Kona Ironman, finishing in 13:23:32. Bissing ended up 112th in the 55-59 men’s age category.

Former Iowa City resident Lesley Smith didn’t finish after a “strange nerve issue” ended her race close to 17 miles of the run. The current Boulder, Colo., resident was on pace for a top-30 finish.

Moving now to the roads, where Tommy Ries Jr. captured the half marathon title for the seventh time this decade at the Iowa City Run for the Schools on Sunday. Ries Jr. ran 1:11:14. Adam Wood was runner-up in 1:14:45. The women’s winner was Danielle Hodge in 1:23:50.

Runablaze’s Phil Young, coming off a 3:26:12 victory at the Hennepin Hundred 50k in Illinois the week before, took the victory for the second consecutive year at the Runner’s Flat 50k in Cedar Falls. Young ran 3:35:12 on Saturday. The Davenport man holds the course record at the Runner’s Flat and Hennepin Hundred races.
