SOCCER

KWU MEN 4, SOUTHWESTERN CHRISTIAN 2: At Graves Family Sports Complex, former Salina South standout Jose Escobedo scored two goals as the Coyotes handed the NAIA’s No. 19 ranked team its first loss.

KWU led 1-0 at halftime on Carlos Loreto’s goal in the 44th minute.

Escobedo, a transfer from Barton Community College, scored his first goal on an assist from Orphee Matafadi in the 69th minute, making it 2-0. Leading 2-1, Escobedo scored again five minutes later, the assist to goalkeeper Luis Barrera. Tim Doherty’s unassisted goal in the 82nd minute gave KWU a 4-1 lead.

Southwestern Christian scored its second goal in the 90th minute.

Wesleyan (2-2) had 11 shots, nine on goal, while Southwestern Christian (5-1) had six shots, four on goal. Barrera had two saves.

SALINA SOUTH 10, ARKANSAS CITY 0: At Arkansas City, Salina South had little trouble in a one-sided road victory over Arkansas City, as seven Cougars scored at least one goal and six were credited with an assist in Tuesday’s match.

No South player had a bigger day than Eric Rincon, who had three of his four goals in the first half and helped the Cougars take a 6-0 lead at the break.

Leo Torres and Alex Escobedo had one goal and two assists each for South, with Brandon Oaks and Kevin Hernandez getting one goal and one assist each. Ivan Velo and Ivan Gonzalez had a single goal each in the first half, while Jorge Navarro and Roy Garcia each had an assist on a second-half goal.

The game ended after Hernandez scored in the 76th minute to give South its 10-goal lead. The Cougars improved to 2-4.

GIRLS TENNIS

DOUBLES TEAM LEADS MUSTANGS: At Goddard, Salina Central’s No. 1 doubles team of Maddie Stack and Grace Holgerson won all three of their matches and took first place in the Goddard Invitational.

The Mustangs’ No. 2 doubles duo of Addie Harvey and Molly Michaelis placed third, winning two of three matches.

In singles competition, Callie Sanborn placed third in the No. 1 bracket with a 2-1 record. Sydney Sorell was fourth in No. 2 with a 1-2 record.

Maize was the team champion with 19 points, followed by Wichita Collegiate with 16 and Central with 14.

COUGARS 2ND AT QUAD: At Maize, the Salina South girls finished second behind Wichita Independent at the Maize quadrangular on Tuesday. The Cougars finished with nine team points, with Independent totaling 13.

South had a first-place finish at No.1 doubles where Lizzy Franco and Kaylee Warren finished 3-0. The No. 2 doubles team of Sadie Farris and Brylee Sader placed second, as did Kati Rivera in No. 2 singles. Hannah Mertz took third in No. 1 singles for the Cougars.

VOLLEYBALL

TROJANS SPLIT: At Gypsum, Southeast of Saline lost the opening match with Republic County on Tuesday night, but came back to get a win in the second match for a split of their North Central Activities Association contests.

Republic County opened with a 25-16, 25-23 victory. Southeast took the second contest 26-24, 25-21.

Statistical leaders for the Trojans, who are now 3-8 overall, 3-1 league, included Katie Moddelmog with nine kills, Kallie Albrecht with 37 digs and Dorothy Ann Sparacino with 17 assists. Southeast also had 17 digs from Meredith Tillberg, Olivia Pennington had seven kills, Brooke Rohr had 10 digs, Makenzie Boley finished with six kills and Karsyn Schlesener added six kills, 12 assists and seven digs.

COUGARS GO 1-1: At Newton, Salina South split a pair of Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League contests on Tuesday, getting a win over Campus and dropping its match against Newton.

The Cougars defeated the Colts 25-21, 25-21, but fell to the Railers 25-12, 25-20. South (7-10) has equaled its win total for all of the 2017 season and is now 2-3 in league play.

Peyton Froome, Reese Altman and Tori Maxton had five kills each for the Cougars, with Froome adding 20 digs and Altman had 15. South also had 32 digs from Khiley Davis, Mariah Janda had 12 assists and three aces, Kiley Aldridge contributed 12 digs and Froome had nine assists.

ELLSWORTH SWEEPS KNIGHTS: At Ellsworth, Sacred Heart dropped a pair of league matches against Ellsworth, with the Bearcats winning the opener 25-11, 25-17, and completing the sweep with a 25-21, 25-13 win.

Statistical leaders for Sacred Heart (4-7 overall, 0-4 NCAA) include Ally Cochran with 15 digs, Ellie Woodall with 15 assists and Hannah Goetz with 10 assists. Amber Palen had eight kills, Emilee Everett finished with seven kills and two blocks, and Kelsie Gack had five kills and three blocks.

GIRLS GOLF

SOUTH SIXTH, CENTRAL 11TH AT TOURNAMENT: At Newton, Salina South’s Zoe Norton shot a 46 and was a medalist in the Newton Invitational played at Sand Creek Station.

South had a 208 team total and Central a 225. Andover shot 158 and was the tournament champion.

Tatum Forrester shot a 53 for South while Kailey Martinez posted a 54 and Lindsay Brown 55.

Central’s Harlee Long shot 50 and placed 19th. Bridgit Conway shot a 56, Elizabeth Collins 66 and Chloe White 80.

Andover’s Kelsey Hawley was the individual medalist with 38, two shots ahead of four other golfers.
