Barker moves on, Roller named ASU softball interim coach
ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Softball is now the third Albany State athletics program that will have a new leader this year.
Amber Barker resigned from her post as head coach Sunday after 2 stellar seasons.
The Dallas native announced she accepted the head softball job at Texas Women's University.
Barker is fresh off a 2018 SIAC championship.
She had a career (54-47) record at Albany State.
Barker led Darton State College through two seasons before taking over the Golden Rams in the consolidation.
She said it was an emotional meeting with her players because of how special the Good Life City has been to her.
"I've grown professionally, I've grown personally," said Barker. "It's really been a journey I know that its only been 4 years but it seems like its been much longer just because all of the growth that has happened. I cant say enough about how grateful I am for everybody who has come along, who has supported."
Barker leaves Saturday, her replacement is already in house.
Four years ago Harley Roller was a catcher at Southern University.
This Spring she'll be the interim softball coach at Albany State.
Roller has spent the past 2 seasons as Barker's assistant.
At Southern she went through a couple coaching changes.
Roller isn't relying on luck. She's using those experiences in Baton Rouge to guide her through the transition.
"I know I'm young and I accept that fact and its a factor I cant change, but I also have mentors like Coach Barker and others in my background that have helped me become the person I am and prepare me for this situation."
