Who is Liberty Manor & Connie Lindsay?

iberty Manor Chief Executive Officer, Connie Lindsay is truly a Women of Valor as she has demonstrated exemplary service in the Tampa Bay community by promoting the developmental and social needs of veterans who have served our country, fought for our independence, but fallen victim to homelessness. Connie is a loving leader whose positive impact upon the lives of countless veterans cannot be overstated. It has been determined that individuals who make up the homeless veteran population have exhausted all reasonable alternatives that will address their immediate financial or residential needs. The mission of Liberty Manor is to provide supported housing to honorably discharged veterans by establishing long-term objectives designed to attribute to selfsufficiency. Throughout Connie’s illustrious tenure as a Board member of the Hillsborough County Homeless Coalition as well as many other leadership roles, she has personified strong and sustaining advocacy for the veteran homeless population. Connie effectively identified a “void in services” that was not currently provided by the Veterans Administration, as the VA provides housing only for those who suffer from a substance abuse addiction or a severe mental health diagnosis. Being cognizant of the military motto “leave no man behind”, Connie was relentless in her mission to make good on that promise. For that reason, Liberty Manor for Veterans was founded in 2006. The spirit of making a difference is evidenced in her every word

and providing homeless veterans an opportunity to flourish emotionally will endure as her legacy. Liberty Manor presented a unique opportunity for Connie to collaboratively identify the multiple needs of veterans and create a seamless community system of care that are destine to rehabilitate veterans who have fallen victim to homelessness. The Shops at Wiregrass Among Ten Regional Malls Sold to QIC of Australia

he Shops at Wiregrass in Wesley Chapel was sold off in a bundle of ten regional retail malls by Cleveland-based Forest City Realty Trust Inc. to investment partner QIC of Australia. The total deal came to $3.2 billion — with $1.55 billion of that sum going to Forest City. The specific value of the Wiregrass mall was not disclosed. Forest City had previewed its intentions last year when it announced it was considering "strategic alternatives for the company's retail portfolio'' of 14 regional malls and 19 specialty retail centers. The deal reflects Forest City's new real estate focus. "This transaction is a win-win for all parties, as we continue to focus our business on urban residential, office and mixeduse assets," stated David J. LaRue, Forest City CEO, "and QIC acquires full ownership of a U.S. retail presence with highquality regional malls in strong markets." "We understand the importance of regional malls to their local communities and have the capability and the capital to evolve these assets into multi-faceted destinations," he said. The Shops at Wiregrass, a 642,000-square-foot open-air mall, commonly referred to as a lifestyle center, opened in 2009 at the corner of State Road 56 and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard. The deal with QIC is expected to close by the end of this year.

Holiday Spending To Reach

$682 billion

Consumers will spend 6% more this holiday. U.S. consumers with annual household incomes greater than $60,000 are forecast to spend $1,507 on gifts, travel and entertainment this holiday season. Households with incomes below that threshold are forecast to spend $810. On average, 83% of U.S. consumers are expected to spend $1,189, an amount equal to or more than they spent last year. The store morphs into a more contemporary version of its former self. Retailers understand the imperative to create a community of commerce—a welcoming environment where shoppers enjoy spending their time as much as they enjoy spending their money. In this community of commerce, store experience matters as much as products and services. Shoppers are as comfortable making themselves at home in this environment as they would be at the home of a good friend. Especially during the holidays, when shoppers have long lists to check off. In fact, the overwhelming majority of consumers (88%) said they will shop in stores this holiday. And 84% said they will shop online. In today’s environment they are constantly recalibrating the finely tuned—and very individualized—

In this omnichannel world, retailers continually look for ways to make shoppers feel at home. With the kind of ambiance that small targeted boutiques—both physical and digital— engender. In fact, more than half of our survey respondents told us they will shop at smaller specialty or independent retailers this holiday. Which explains why large brands acquiring smaller ones are maintaining those brands’ individual specialty identities. projected to reach $129B this year, up 12% over 2016 [Forrester] With four weeks or so to go before Black Friday, online retailers are well into mapping their strategy for pulling as much of 2017’s holiday e-commerce spending as possible. This year, Forrester Research Inc. reports two out of five consumers plan on spending more online during this year’s holiday season than in 2016. According to Forrester’s 2017 Online Holiday Outlook report for the US, the total number of online holiday shoppers will increase 3 percent compared to last year, with consumers spending an average of $689 online — up 8 percent over 2016. Forrester says this upward swing in online holiday shoppers, and the amount of money they plan to spend, will deliver a 12 percent year-over-year increase in online holiday retail sales. While not as big a jump as what happened between 2015 and 2016 (11 percent to 14 percent), it still represents a double-digit increase for holiday e-commerce sales, with online shoppers spending a total of $129 billion this year, compared to the $115 billion spent in 2016. Consumers over 35 — from Gen Xers to boomers to the Greatest Generation — plan to spend more than 60% of their holiday budget on family. Millennials come in at 51%. While travel ranks high on millennials’ wish lists, Gen Xers and boomers are more likely to buy gifts of travel for themselves. Boomers and the Greatest Generation (aged 71+) will treat themselves to dining and entertainment options far more than other age groups. Meanwhile, 40% of young Gen Z (ages 13 to 16) will shop solely in stores. Consumers will spend close to 30% of their holiday budget on travel, slightly more than they did last year. Those who plan to travel will spend an average of $1,216 on travel alone, bringing their overall spending on gifts, travel and entertainment to $2,269, well above the $1,189 overall average for all consumers. Importance of Breast Health All Year Round

he month of October brings a large focus on breast cancer and the importance of early detection through self-exams and screenings. However, breast health and awareness is important all year long. Just like life itself, with breast cancer risk, there are some things you can control and some that you cannot. Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel has a list of risk factors and symptoms of breast cancer that you should be aware of and discuss with your primary care physician, gynecologist or breast surgeon. Risk factors you can’t control: • Being female • Age (greatest risk between 45-75 years of age) • Personal history of breast cancer or abnormal breast biopsies (atypical hyperplasia) • Family history of breast cancer • Race (white women are at highest risk, followed by black women who are more likely to be diagnosed younger and at later stages) • Estrogen exposure over your lifetime (reproductive/menstrual history) • Genetic mutations (BRCA 1/2) • Breast density • Radiation to the chest • Exposure to DES (diethylstilbestrol) Risk factors you can control: • Weight • Diet • Exercise • Alcohol consumption • Tobacco use • Use of hormone replacement It is important to be familiar with your breasts and contact your healthcare provider should you experience any of the following signs or symptoms. Men can get breast cancer, too, so no one should ignore these symptoms. • Change in the appearance of the breast or nipple: • Change in size or shape of the breast • Puckering of the skin • Pulling inward of the nipple • Orange peel appearance to skin • Redness • Warmth • Rash • Swelling • Nipple drainage (spotting in bra or night clothes) • Change in how the nipple or breast feel: • Lumps, hard knots or thickening • Pain • Tender nipple Things you can do to help prevent breast cancer: • Maintain a healthy weight • Exercise regularly • Avoid alcohol intake • Do not smoke

Annuals/Bedding plants: Create a display of fall colors with cool-season plants. Some examples include pansy, viola, snapdragon, dianthus, cape daisy, and alyssum. Bulbs: Many bulbs like to get their start in cool weather. Bulbs to plant this month include amaryllis, crinum, and daylily. Herbs: Continue planting herbs from seeds or plants. A wide variety of herbs prefer cool, dry weather, including cilantro, parsley, sage, and thyme. Vegetables: Continue planting coolseason crops, such as beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrot, kale, and lettuce.

What to Do Perennials: Divide and replant overgrown perennials and bulbs now so that they establish before the cold weather arrives. Lawn disease: Watch for brown patch and large patch. These fungal diseases cause areas of grass to turn brown. Since treatment is difficult, prevention with proper cultural practices is key. These diseases become active when the soil temperature, measured 2–4 in. deep, is between 65°F and 75°F and go dormant when the weather warms in May. Scale insects: Take advantage of lower temperatures to apply horticultural oil sprays to control scale insects. Irrigation: Turn off systems and water only if needed. Plants need less supplemental watering in cooler weather. Poinsettias: Watch for hornworms on poinsettias planted in the landscape. Veterans Day occurs on November 11 every year.

n 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day. In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed by Congress, which moved the celebration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. The law went into effect in 1971, but in 1975 President Gerald Ford returned Veterans Day to November 11, due to the important historical significance of the date. Great Britain, France, Australia and Canada also commemorate the veterans of World War I and World War II on or near November 11th: Canada has Remembrance Day, while Britain has Remembrance Sunday (the second Sunday of November). In Europe, Great Britain and the Commonwealth countries it is common to observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. every November 11.

The military men and women who serve and protect the U.S. come from all walks of life; they are parents, children, grandparents, friends, neighbors and coworkers, and are an important part of their communities. Here are some facts about the veteran population of the United States: 16.1 million living veterans served during at least one war. 5.2 million veterans served in peacetime. 2 million veterans are women. 7 million veterans served during the Vietnam War. 5.5 million veterans served during the Persian Gulf War. Of the 16 million Americans who served during World War II, about 558,000 are still alive. 2 million veterans served during the Korean War. 6 million veterans served in peacetime. As of 2014, 2.9 million veterans received compensation for serviceconnected disabilities. As of 2014, 3 states have more than 1 million veterans among their population: California (1.8 million), Florida (1.6 million) and Texas (1.7 million). The VA health care system had 54 hospitals in 1930, since then it has expanded to include 171 medical centers; more than 350 outpatient, community, and outreach clinics; 126 nursing home care units; and 35 live-in care facilities for injured or disabled vets.

Transition to Fall: How to Stay Healthy Through the Season Change

s we begin to transition from summer into the cooler season of fall, we find ourselves shifting gears and coming back into more structured routines. For some people, this might mean planning daily activities around pets, school, work, homework, meal times, exercise, time with friends and family, and personal down time for focused rejuvenation. For others, moving into the fall season may be a simpler transition of adjusting to the shift in weather patterns and fewer daylight hours, which affects everything from when we run errands to exercise regimens and what kinds of meals we are preparing. For most of us, it’s a combination of all of these things.

Regardless of our individual lifestyles, it occurs to each of us—around this time of year—that more awareness needs to be placed on how to stay healthy during the seasonal junction, Ritu Sandhi in Sanskrit, between summer and fall. Here are three things to ease the transition.

Seasonal Cleanse

The transition between summer and fall is a great time of year to do your seasonal cleanse or juice fast. As we know, seasonal cleansing rids our bodies of all sorts of toxins, pollutants, harsh chemicals, pesticides, and any other Ama (toxic residue) that our physical body has accumulated over the summer. Cleanses will help to purify and tone the internal organs, cells, and tissues of the body, flushing out impurities that aren’t serving us.

Meditation

no agenda. This ‘down time’ allows us to simply BE; to connect with stillness, to experience silence, and to acquaint ourselves with the ever-present witness that is our essential nature. It is through the non-active participation of honoring quiet time at some point each day, we are able to correlate aspects of activity and rest in a way that elicits a dynamic state of balance within. If you have fallen away from your silent meditation practice, now is the time to recommit. If you are coming off of a busy summer season of rushing from one activity to another, find time to sit quietly in nature or in your favorite spot and just listen. If your meditation practice is solid, and you frequent your sacred silent space, then perhaps this is the time to go deeper into that stillness.

Recapitulation

Introducing the practice of recapitulation at the end of each day can also be a powerful, conscious choice-making tool. Recapitulation (or re-capping) of your day allows you to play out your day in your mind’s eye and shift into the witnessing state of awareness, where it becomes possible to observe your choices

and determine if there are any shifts you would like to make. Recapitulation is best done at the end of each day, just before you go to sleep for the night. Here is a simple-to-follow guideline for practicing recapitulation. The whole process should only take a minute or two. 1. Sit upright in your bed and close your eyes. 2. Take a few deep breaths and settle comfortably into your space. 3. Begin to play back your day on the screen of your awareness. 4. Start from when you woke up and move through each of your experiences, conversations, and behaviors all the way up to this moment. 5. Play back your day relatively quickly—as though you’re watching a movie reel—not spending too much time on the details. 6. Just observe. 7. When you have finished, settle into your bed for the night and sleep well.

he Cheval Women’s Club, INC., opened their new fiscal year season with the Charity Awards Dinner September 19, 2016. They had great attendance and all charities were present. The president, Billie Byers, opened the meeting by welcoming all returning members, new members and guests from the charities. Billie reported the donations increased 43.4% over and above last year. Their membership increased 25% above last year, the state of the organization is well and growing. Every single member of the organization should be proud of their individual contributions, which were made in many different ways. All of the committee women and co-chairwomen were thanked for their work done. Betty Carrig, Treasurer, was recognized for all her efforts in arranging the August dinner at St Joseph, North. She gave the financial report and awarded the charity checks to the following who spoke for their charities: Michelle Smith, Administrative Manger Joshua House Lutz Location James Griffin , Lt. Colonel USA Retired Operation Helping House David Caras. Coast Guard Radio Navigator Aircrew and Aircrew Chief, Retired Paws for Patriots (and his service dog BOBB) The Charities were delighted to receive the donations and spoke as to how it would help their causes and about their organizations. The Club had drawings for it's members and in particular for new members and returning members who joined during the summer months. Sally Spencer, New Member Ambassador announced the new members and is active in communicating to them about the organization and the benefits.

was elected to President in April 2016 after serving two years as Treasurer for the Cheval Women’s Club, Inc. We are proud to be an organization with a charter and a mission statement of “fostering friendships and raising funds for local community charities. As such we are a Non-Profit 501©(3) corporation, this board and the recent board worked long and diligently to achieve this status. I am very pleased to be serving this year with the following women on the board, Melissa Burkhiser, Vice President, Betty Carrig, Treasurer, Mariel Rubin, Secretary, and Mary Ann Back, Past President and now on the advisory board. Our vision is that we find new ways to continue to grow the club, through new members with the same interest as our charter and that we increase our funding for our chosen charities, on a yearly basis. It is important to note that we as a board or as members, take no salary, expenses, mileage, or remuneration. During the 2014 to 2015 season we grew 34% and during fiscal year 2015 to 2016 we grew l00%, during the 2016 to 2017 fiscal year we grew 43.4% as relates to our community donations. Make no mistake about it we are extremely proud of these achievements. We are all working hard to make this year another growth year. We also thank all of our sponsors, donors, co-hosts, speakers, members, and member committees who contribute to making this possible. We have many informative, educational speakers, and fun events planned for the coming year, along with our Signature fund raiser’s the Holiday Bazaar and the Kentucky Derby Charity Classic. We have co-hosted the last two events with the Cheval Golf & Athletic Club in Cheval. Recently this year we held our Charity Awards Banquet, where we make the formal donations to our charities for the prior year’s efforts of fund raising. Among the many events we hold or have held are a Hat Attitude Adjustment, a fun evening of Dancing Like the Stars, a One Woman Show (Play), White Elephant sale, Handbag exchanges, Breast Cancer Awareness, Fashion Shows, Interior Design decorating, Trunk Travel Shows, Designer Boutique events, Wine Tasting and education on wines, and many others that are planned. We are a group of like- minded women who agree on two issue’s that we are interested in forming friendships among our group and the community, also: importantly we are interested and motivated in raising funds for our local community, and we have a lot of fun doing just that. As one member recently said she was so glad she came to the Charity Awards Event because she now understood what we are all about and was so proud to be part of our organization. Lutz Branch Library Overview

The Lutz Branch Library is located in the heart of Lutz, in northern Hillsborough County at the corner of U.S. Highway 41 and Lutz-Lake Fern Road W. The 12,000 square foot branch includes a community room and two small meeting rooms.

Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Lutz Branch Library are active partners with the library and operate The Book Depot, their bookstore located in the north corner of the reading room. The Friends use funds raised by book sales to support the Lutz Branch Library and to pay for library programs for adults, teens and children.

History

Library service began in 1961 when the bookmobile started making a regular stop in Lutz. In the late 1960s, the library guild of the Lutz-Land O'Lakes Women's Club set up a temporary library of 1,000 volumes on home-made bookcases in a building on U.S. Highway 41. With a staff of volunteers the library was open 20 hours per week.

In April 1970, the Lutz Branch Library opened at its present location. To better meet the needs of the growing community construction of a 5,000 square foot expansion and a complete renovation to the original 7,000 square foot structure began on July 29, 2003. The project was completed on June 1, 2004. On March 9, 2007, the Reading Room was dedicated to Helen Swisshelm in recognition of her long and unwavering commitment to the Lutz Branch Library and the library system. She is the founder of the Friends of the Lutz Library and was its President from 2000 to 2007. Additionally, she served on the Tampa-Hillsborough County Library Board from 1990 to 2005 and as its Chair from 1992 to 1993.

The first Thanksgiving was celebrated between the Pilgrims and the Indians in 1621.That first feast was a three day affair. Life for the early settlers was difficult. The fall harvest was time for celebration. It was also a time of prayer, thanking God for a good crop. The Pilgrims and the Indians created a huge feast including a wide variety of animals and fowl, as well as fruits and vegetables from the fall harvest. This early celebration was the start of today's holiday celebration. Like then, we celebrate with a huge feast. Today, most of us enjoy Turkey with "all the trimming". The "trimming" include a wide variety of foods that are a tradition for your family. Those traditional foods often replicate the foods at the first Thanksgiving feast. While others, are traditional ethnic or religious groups recipe, or a special food item that your family always serves at Thanksgiving dinner. Then, to top it off, pumpkin pies, apple pies, an even mince meat pies are bountiful around the table. American Thanksgiving traditions revolve around a huge and lavish meal, usually with Turkey as the centerpiece. For those who do not like Turkey, a Roast or Prime Rib is common. As tradition has it in most families, a special prayer of thanks precedes the meal. In many homes, family members will each mention something they are very thankful for. Did you know? Potatoes were not part of the first Thanksgiving. Irish immigrants had not yet brought them to North America. After the first Thanksgiving, the observance was sporadic and almost forgotten until the early 1800's. It was usually celebrated in late September or October. What’s the Real History of Black Friday? BY SARAH PRUITT

t makes sense that the term “Black Friday” might refer to the single day of the year when retail companies finally go “into the black” (i.e. make a profit). The day after Thanksgiving is, of course, when crowds of turkey-stuffed shoppers descend on stores all over the country to take advantage of the season’s biggest holiday bargains. But the real story behind Black Friday is a bit more complicated—and darker—than that. The first recorded use of the term “Black Friday” was applied not to holiday shopping but to financial crisis: specifically, the crash of the U.S. gold market on September 24, 1869. Two notoriously ruthless Wall Street financiers, Jay Gould and Jim Fisk, worked together to buy up as much as they could of the nation’s gold, hoping to drive the price sky-high and sell it for astonishing profits. On that Friday in September, the conspiracy finally unraveled, sending the stock market into free-fall and bankrupting everyone from Wall Street barons to farmers. The most commonly repeated story behind the post-Thanksgiving shoppingrelated Black Friday tradition links it to retailers. As the story goes, after an entire year of operating at a loss (“in the red”) stores would supposedly earn a profit (“went into the black”) on the day after Thanksgiving, because holiday shoppers blew so much money on discounted merchandise. Though it’s true that retail

companies used to record losses in red and profits in black when doing their accounting, this version of Black Friday’s origin is the officially sanctioned—but inaccurate—story behind the tradition. In recent years, another myth has surfaced that gives a particularly ugly twist to the tradition, claiming that back in the 1800s Southern plantation owners could buy slaves at a discount on the day after Thanksgiving. Though this version of Black Friday’s roots has understandably led some to call for a boycott of the retail holiday, it has no basis in fact. The true story behind Black Friday, however, is not as sunny as retailers might have you believe. Back in the 1950s, police in the city of Philadelphia used the term to describe the chaos that ensued on the day after Thanksgiving, when hordes of suburban shoppers and tourists flooded into the city in advance of the big Army-Navy football game held on that Saturday every year. Not only would Philly cops not be able to take the day off, but they would have to work extra-long shifts dealing with the additional crowds and traffic. Shoplifters would also take advantage of the bedlam in stores to make off with merchandise, adding to the law enforcement headache. By 1961, “Black Friday” had caught on in Philadelphia, to the extent that the city’s merchants and boosters tried unsuccessfully to change it to “Big

Friday” in order to remove the negative connotations. The term didn’t spread to the rest of the country until much later, however, and as recently as 1985 it wasn’t in common use nationwide. Sometime in the late 1980s, however, retailers found a way to reinvent Black Friday and turn it into something that reflected positively, rather than negatively, on them and their customers. The result was the “red to black” concept of the holiday mentioned earlier, and the notion that the day after Thanksgiving marked the occasion when America’s stores finally turned a profit. (In fact, stores traditionally see bigger sales on the Saturday before Christmas.) The Black Friday story stuck, and pretty soon the term’s darker roots in Philadelphia were largely forgotten. Since then, the one-day sales bonanza has morphed into a four-day event, and spawned other “retail holidays” such as Small Business Saturday/Sunday and Cyber Monday. Stores started opening earlier and earlier on that Friday, and now the most dedicated shoppers can head out right after their Thanksgiving meal. According to a pre-holiday survey this year by the National Retail Federation, an estimated 135.8 million Americans definitely plan to shop over the Thanksgiving weekend (58.7 percent of those surveyed), though even more (183.8 million, or 79.6 percent) said they would or might take advantage of the online deals offered on Cyber Monday.

Gratitude - Heart-Centered Spiritual Key

It is a inner sense of total and complete love from the heart. It is a knowing that all is well, and you feel a deeper sense of thankfulness for all that is in your life. You experience a feeling of true gratitude, and a combination of feelings: total and unconditional joy, happiness, security, and never-ending bliss, as well as limitless appreciation and thankfulness for all things. Your heart swells with the love you feel...in gratitude for the Universe and all the blessings you have, are, and will be receiving. This is the spiritual experience of gratitude. It is a time of opening one's heart to the unconditional and Divine Love within. It is an experience of being in appreciation and total alignment with All That Is, as e as all that is in one's life and experience. The conduit to this omnipresent and all powerful energy is the heart. The open heart, Unconditional Love, is the key. We all have the ability to create. It is the Divine power within each of us. All thoughts and emotions have an energy that exudes from us. While it is said by those who are body language experts that 95 percent of communication is physical body signals, I submit that we act in accordance with our thoughts and emotions. We subconsciously signal to others what and how we view them or issues surrounding us. The other 5 percent is said to be energetic, so in essence we emit our thoughts through subconscious energy- and in turn, attract

that which is like our thoughts. To illustrate this attraction exists, see what happens when you are in sync with others in a group – they will know it and accept you. On the other hand, the saying “ never go looking for trouble because you will find it” is so true because a chip on the shoulder engenders non-acceptance by others. In short, people know your views even if you think you are not displaying them. Personal relationships are the same because couples come together for their similarities- we all like being with someone who shares similar views, thoughts and interests. The adage that "like attracts like". Most people view the term gratitude as mere appreciation for an event or gift, a simple "Oh, that is nice, thank you.” Gratitude, as mentioned, is a totality of understanding that all things come from Source/God, and that as we think and feel, all things are available to us and it is all good. One deeply thanks and is appreciative for the Universe's gifts, knowing that we co-create those events,

situations and events and that it is from a pure and loving heart that one manifests. Gratitude's essence is All That Is. While it may not seem possible to be in a total loving space in every situation, merely thinking or saying a blessing of gratitude is important and a powerful start to achieving this state. All experiences provide a spiritual lesson and we may not understand the lesson in the moment. Upon reflection and honest inner work (such as taking 100 percent responsibility for all things in our life) we comprehend and "get it". Thus, being in gratitude for the daily divine lessons is a true spiritual practice. The more one is in gratitude, the more one is creating loving and beautiful happenstances. This is where spiritual work begins. To strengthen the energy, consistency and discipline are required along with intention and daily action. Enjoy your gratitude- it is a powerfully positive state of mind and consciousness lifter!

eneral Information Plaque or tartar development is the most common cause of dental disease in pets. Periodontal disease has been estimated to affect 90% of dogs and cats over two years of age, and it essentially starts with accumulation of dental plaque. Studies have shown that regularly brushing your pet’s teeth is the most efficient way to prevent accumulation of plaque. Train your pet to have its mouth handled before introducing the toothbrush. Wrap nylon, gauze or a wash cloth around your finger and gently wipe the gums. Make it rewarding and fun for your pet but be cautious, as even a familiar pet may bite! Cleaning applicators: Any soft-bristled nylon toothbrush can be used. Your veterinarian can provide special brushes or you can use the human kind. If the gums are infected, you may use cotton swabs soaked with medicated dental preparations. You can wrap gauze around your finger and use it to wipe the gums and teeth. In cases of a severely infected mouth, you may want to change toothbrushes at least weekly to prevent re-infection of your pet’s mouth. As an alternative, after using and rinsing the brush off with hot water, soak it in a mixture of chorine solution prepared by adding 2 drops of household liquid bleach to one

cup of warm water. Soak the brush for at least one minute, then allow it to air dry until the next dental session. Brushing action should be directed at the gum line at the base of the teeth. Be gentle and offer a treat or praise at the end of the session. Once daily brushing is adequate and you only need to brush the outside of the teeth, not the inside. Dentifrices: Do not use baking soda or salt to brush your pet’s teeth. Your pet will swallow them and the added sodium can be harmful, especially if your pet has an existing cardiovascular condition. Several animal dental preparations are available through your veterinarian. These will help you do the best job with the least effort. Some of these include CET, Petzlife oral care gel, Maxiguard Gel, Nolvadent and Biotene solution. If your pet already has tartar accumulated on its teeth, an initial dental cleaning is often essential before starting a routine, home dental cleaning program. If you are unable to clean your pet’s teeth, the following chewing items will help reduce plaque: Nylafloss and Nylabone. Both home and regular professional care are required for the most successful dental program.
