Applications to open next week for holiday food baskets, toys

Connellsville-Scottdale Salvation Army Service Unit, 300 W. Crawford Ave., Connellsville, will take applications for food baskets and toys for Christmas starting Oct. 13 until Nov. 19 at its office. To apply, call 724-628-2010 for an appointment. At the appointment, which you have to apply in person, you will need: photo identification; proof of residence (such as a utility bill, rent receipt, etc.); birth certificate, Social Security card or a form of identification for the children; and proof of all household income. Eligible service areas are: Alverton, Banning, Champion, Connellsville, Dawson, Dickerson Run, Dunbar, Everson, Indian Head, Layton, Leisenring, Melcroft, Mill Run, Normalville, Perryopolis, Ruffsdale, Scottdale, Star Junction, Tarrs, Vanderbilt, Van Meter, West Leisenring, White, Whitsett and Wickhaven.

• The partner parishes of St. John the Baptist and St. Joseph will serve a ham dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday. They are planning a fall festival Oct. 31. These events will be held in St. John's social hall, 416 S. Broadway, Scottdale. For details, call 724-887-6321.

• Scottdale council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the borough building, 10 Mt. Pleasant Road. If you want an item put on the agenda, call ahead of time at 724-887-8220. The public is welcome.

• A Bereavement Support Group will gather in Christ United Methodist Church, 201 Market St., Scottdale. Sessions are from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 13, 20 and 27. Participants should plan to attend all three sessions. A certified grief counselor will facilitate. To register, call the church office at 724-887-6724 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or leave a message.

• Scottdale Area Association of Churches Food Pantry, a partner of Westmoreland County Food Bank, will conduct its regular monthly distribution from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday in Christ United Methodist Church, Scottdale. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m., if ready. First-time registrants should bring proof of residence. Call the pantry coordinator at 412-916-2319. Distribution is held the second Wednesday of the month.

• A spaghetti dinner will be available from 4to 6:30 p.m. Friday in Christ United Methodist Church, Scottdale. Cost is $7 for adults, $3.50 for children 7 to 12; and free for 6 and younger. Takeout and delivery will be available; to place orders or for details, call 724-887-6724. Gift certificates are available.

• “The Experience” — a family-oriented outdoor contemporary service — will be presented at 6 p.m. Saturday outside Center Bethel Church of God, 428 Ruffsdale-Alverton Road, Alverton. Pastor Lee Kline will be the speaker, with music by The Experience Praise Team. All are welcome. Refreshments will be provided afterward in the fellowship hall. • A spaghetti dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 18. The event is sponsored by the Altar Society of St. John's Byzantine Catholic Church, 525 Porter Ave., Scottdale. Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger. Dinner includes a salad, roll, dessert and beverage. Takeout is available. There will be a Chinese auction and basket raffle.

• Kudos to Mt. Pleasant's Mikayla Lewandowski, 16, a Southmoreland High School junior, who recently earned first place in archery at the Derry Agricultural Fair and the Westmoreland Fair in the Compound Senior Division. She also earned first place at the Pennsylvania 4-H State Achievement Days archery competition.

• Creative Communication announced its fall 2015 essay, poetry and art contests. Essay contest divisions are: grades 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12 with 10 top winners in each division. To enter an essay, write between 100 and 250 words on any nonfiction topic. The deadline for the essay contest is Oct. 15. Poetry contest divisions are: kindergarten through third grade, 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12 grades, with 10 top winners in each division. To enter a poem, submit one original poem in English, 21 lines or less. The deadline for the poetry contest is Dec. 3.
